Due to confusion about the information regarding the revised mods of the Forsaken expansion for Destiny 2, Bungie has now clarified further uncertainties. The studio has particularly focused on the sources for mods.
In anticipation of Forsaken, Bungie has already revealed details about the upcoming new mods that will be introduced with the release of the autumn expansion. You can find the previous information here:

However, some questions remain unanswered. Especially regarding the sources for future mods, there were still numerous question marks. In the latest TWaB blog, the creators of Destiny 2 have clarified further doubts.
These are the sources for the new mods in Forsaken
Mods are intended to become quite rare with Forsaken. However, in return, you should be able to adapt your arsenal noticeably to your play style. This applies to both armor and weapons.
Those who already have a huge pile of previous mods or mod components can start their new mod collection in Year 2 right at the Gunsmith. Everyone else will have to grind for it – with one hard-earned drop after another.
How to get mods in Year 2:
- You can acquire mods from equipment items and then use them on other gear. To do this, you need to dismantle the original item that dropped with the corresponding mod
- If you like a specific combination of item (weapon or piece of armor) and mod, feel free to keep it. However, you can also dismantle the item to apply its mod to another suitable piece of equipment
- If you want to keep the item, you can simply overlay a new mod onto the old one in this case
- Legendary Year 2 weapons and armor that are not from the raid have a small chance of being equipped with a mod
- Weapons and armor purchased from vendors come without mods
- If you have enough mod components and Glimmer, you can also visit the Gunsmith Banshee-44 directly. He offers two mod packages for direct purchase: Year 2 Armor Mod and Year 2 Weapon Mod. Both are updated daily
- You can obtain mod components by dismantling other loose mods
Armor:
- All exotic armor drops have a chance to be equipped with a mod, regardless of their year
- Armor mods from Year 2 always yield a mod component when dismantled
- Legendary armor mods from Year 1 always drop a mod component when dismantled
- Rare armor mods from Year 1 have a small chance of dropping a mod component when dismantled
Weapons:
- Weapon mods from Year 2 always give you a mod component and legendary shards when dismantled
- Legendary weapon mods from Year 1 always drop a mod component and weapon master materials when dismantled
- Rare weapon mods from Year 1 have a small chance of dropping a mod component and weapon master materials when dismantled
Important:
- Armor mods from Year 1 that you have in your inventory will no longer function with the Forsaken release. They can be dismantled or exchanged for materials
- Armor mods from Year 1 that are embedded in your Year 1 armor will also not work anymore. However, they will remain in the slot of the respective armor
- Armor mods from Year 2 can be used on both Year 1 armor pieces and Year 2 armor
