In the current Season 21 of Destiny 2, players are facing a new challenge to obtain the exotic scout rifle “Malevolent Tool.” And it is truly malevolent.
The “Season of Depth” in Destiny 2 is in week 5 and has not revealed all its secrets yet. Two exotic weapons are already in the hands of Guardians, but an Exo weapon called “Malevolent Tool” from the Veist forge is still missing.
That they exist is known through a triumph from week 10, which states:
- Complete the “Whetstone” encounter in diving sessions to earn the scout rifle “Malevolent Tool.”.
In the meantime, however, the Guardians have picked up the trail and believe that the quest for the last weapon Exo of Season 21 begins with an Exo fish.
Is this finally the long-awaited Exo quest?
Two things have changed in week 5: On one hand, we received a new fishing quest. Bungie also pointed this out in the new TWiD (“This Week in Destiny” blog), with the tip: “Remember, you have to catch them all.
On the other hand, new exotic fish have entered the game, which drop a strange item for you.
After visiting Hawthorne in the Tower, she tells you about a strange event with exotic fish and hands you the quest “Fishing Trip: Throne World.”.
- The quest consists of 6 steps, and you need to fish a lot to reach Platinum.
- Different fish qualities grant progress at different rates.
- In total, you need 600 points:
- An Exo fish brings 20 points, a Legendary fish 5, a Rare fish 2, and an Uncommon fish 1 point.
Once you’ve done that, you can return to Hawthorne in the Tower and collect your reward. But don’t get your hopes up too early, as you won’t receive the new Exotic there. Rather, you can choose between two Legendary rewards.
Still, both may be related. Bungie may have tried to ensure with the quest that you fish for everything to uncover the mystery, and that enough Guardians are fishing with you to progress better.
Because you need at least one Exo fish in your inventory to turn it in at the aquarium in the H.E.L.M., triggering the mystery.
So, if you’re currently avoiding the boring activity of fishing in Season 21, you’ll probably need to cast your line for the Exo again. Whether with or without the quest likely doesn’t matter.
Catch an Exo fish: If you start in the Throne World, you need to reel in the new Exo fish “Whispering Moth Carp,” which Bungie has now released.
The fish drop is random. So you might be lucky and have it on the line right away. Or you might have to stand around fishing for a long time.
- “Concentrated Fishing” and “Perfect Catch” do help to at least slightly improve your catch chances.
We can’t complain this week, as we had the loot god on our side and managed to complete the task in about 20 minutes. Other Guardians, like Paul Tassi, had less luck and needed 40 minutes plus 90 bait.
However, next week, you’ll probably have to invest time in fishing again, so only true fishing enthusiasts will likely find enjoyment in it.
Step 2 is a bit easier: Once you receive the Exo fish, fly back to the H.E.L.M. Turn it in there as usual at the aquarium terminal.
Besides the usual Exos and a few materials, you will also get the item “Broken Blade of the Strife.” With this, you will now proceed to the diving mission of Season 21. You can also start it via the H.E.L.M.
Deliver the broken sword in the diving mission: Attentive Guardians will have already noticed the three different Taken statues, as seen in the latest dungeon “Ghosts of the Depth”.
So far, they had no function. With the item “Broken Blade of the Strife” in your possession, you can now interact with them.
- One statue is located at the entrance of the encounter, after you have dived into the Methane Sea.
- The second statue can be found in the first encounter of the dive, right next to the spot where you place the Egregore Resonator. Take a look around, then you’ll see a door leading to a room on your left.
- The third statue can then be found after the first encounter in the second part of the underwater sections.
This is how you find the 3 Taken statues in the dive: The statues are relatively easy to find, so you shouldn’t have trouble getting rid of your find. Alternatively, you can watch the way in this video:
If you did everything correctly, the statue should light up red upon submission, and Xivu Arath, Savathun’s sister, will scream again.
However, we recommend waiting until you have snagged all three items. You can activate the statues again once you have a key. Therefore, it would make sense to turn them all in together in the coming weeks.
What happens next? Starting from week 6, Hawthorne will drop another quest for you. This time she’ll send you to Nessus to fish. There, a new Exo fish named “Vexed Armored Fish” will drop.
By the last weekly reset in week 7, the last Exo fish named “Aeonian Battlefish” should also be unlocked to activate the third and final statue.
- There are a total of 4 of these Exo fish:
- “Keprischer Axe Fish”
- “Whispering Moth Carp” available since week 5
- “Vexed Armored Fish” available since week 6
- “Aeonian Battlefish”
Last but not least, there’s the final challenge called the “Whetstone” encounter.
And what if you have bad luck while fishing? If you’re still haunted by angler’s luck despite the lucky week, here’s a tip: Not everyone in the fire team needs the Exo fish. It’s sufficient if one person has all three fish and opens the door for you.
- Every member of the fire team that completes the Whetstone mission receives the Exotic.

What can the Exo Scout Rifle “Malevolent Tool” do?
For many Guardians, this sounded very tempting: As YouTuber Redrix reports about datamining, the weapon is said to be an exotic Stasis scout rifle. A catalyst will also be available.
- Intrinsic Advantage: “Creeping Weariness” – Quick, precise hits slow down targets.
- Exo Perk: Precision hits while “Creeping Weariness” is active create a Stasis Shard that returns to you.
- Catalyst: Causes the magazine to be refilled by collecting Stasis Shards.
For clarification: Every headshot would slow down your enemies. If you then use a fragment that grants primary weapons additional damage against frozen targets, this makes you even more dangerous. Hunters could also combine this with the “Mask of Bakris” since it increases damage for Stasis and Arc weapons for a short time after dodging.
The Exo weapon could thus be well-suited for several Stasis builds.
