In Destiny 2 there is a new secret Exotic star. The pistol “Pathfinder” is inspired by one of the most famous weapons from Halo: the Magnum pistol. In this guide, we explain what you need to do to obtain the new Halo Exotic.
The “Pathfinder” is also a relic from the old days, obtainable during the 30th anniversary. Bungie has brought back memories of the Magnum pistol from Halo to Destiny 2 with this weapon and its associated quest. To obtain it, players must complete the quest “Magnum Opus”.
Who can obtain the weapon: The quest is available for all players for free, allowing everyone to enjoy this exotic top-tier weapon. Especially the Destiny 2 PvP community is already excited about the Halo return.
What makes the pistol so special?
- The weapon is kinetic and uses special ammunition.
- It features the exotic perk “Full Brake”. This allows the pistol to produce oversized heavy caliber long-range shots. Additionally, it fires automatically with an increased fire rate. It deals increased precision damage to unshielded opponents.
- Thanks to “Hold Back”, the weapon’s recoil is reduced when you tap the trigger while simultaneously enhancing precision.
The quest “Magnum Opus” starts in Eternity: To obtain the quest for the weapon, visit Xur’s treasure chamber in the new location “Eternity” and follow the interactions. After receiving various items and gifts, Xur will finally give you the quest “Magnum Opus”.
Step 1: First, collect “Strange Coins”
How to obtain “Strange Coins”: Players randomly receive “Strange Coins” from various activities, such as the new 6-player activity “Trials of Eternity”, Vanguard Strikes, or Crucible matches. To complete this quest step, you need a total of 7 “Strange Coins”.
Our Tip: We recommend playing the new activity “Trials of Eternity” for this. This way, you’ll receive not only the required “Strange Coins”, but also rank progress with Xur. The rank progress will be important later for the “Magnum Opus” quest.
By the way: Xur loves “Strange Coins”: These special coins are also a relic from the old Destiny 1 times. Previously, “Strange Coins” were necessary in Destiny 1 to buy exotic weapons, gear, or engrams. Thanks to the 30th anniversary, this currency is back and is a great reminder for many players.

Step 2: Complete 3 bounties from the mysterious Starhorse
Once that’s done, the quest requires completing three of the so-called “Starhorse bounties”.
Where can I find the Starhorse? The Starhorse is an NPC you can find in the new location “Eternity”. That’s where you can also visit Xur in his treasure chamber. It offers you daily and weekly bounties there.
Difficult bounties give you bonus progress. However, you can only complete the bounties one at a time since you can only carry one bounty at a time. So pick one and then start the 6-player activity “Trials of Eternity” via the navigator. The activity features a player search in normal difficulty.
Step 3: Obtain a “Strange Key” from Xur
This quest step is relatively easy, especially if you follow our tip and played the activity “Trials of Eternity” for the “Strange Coins”. To acquire the key from Xur, you must have reached at least “Strange Favor” rank 4.
Step 4: Enter the area of the “Trials of Eternity”
With the key in your inventory, you can now enter the area of the 6-player activity. It is directly accessible from Xur’s treasure chamber by passing through the interstellar fog that teleports you away. We have marked the entrance for you.
Now lower the barrier and follow the quest diamond: Once there, keep to the right. There is a type of “map” on a stone, which is a part of a gear. Here, you can activate the strange key and lower a barrier that opens the path to a new area. If you look closely, you can see the Bungie gear there.
Find the “Anomalous Object” in the Cryo Pod: The quest diamond will guide you again. Walk towards the gear. There you will find the entrance to a cave. Various jumping passages will follow that you need to complete on your way. Once that’s done, you’ll reach a Cryo Pod that you can open. Here, you will receive the last part to obtain the exotic pistol “Pathfinder”.
Step 5: Visit Banshee-44 in the Tower
The final quest step sends you to the gunsmith Banshee-44. Because your pistol, the “Anomalous Object”, is not yet ready for use. He will repair it for you. In the Tower, you will then receive the finished weapon and complete the quest.
How to get the Masterwork Catalyst for the “Pathfinder” pistol?
This exotic pistol also received a Masterwork Catalyst, just like the Gjallarhorn. However, the catalyst is tied to further reputation rank progress with Xur.
To get the catalyst, you need the “Anomalous Access Card”: To make the weapon a Masterwork, you need the “Anomalous Access Card”. You will receive it as soon as you reach reputation rank 16 with Xur. You must therefore play the activity “Trials of Eternity” and complete bounties to level up the rank. Daily and additional bounties from Xur are ideal for this.
How to activate the Masterwork Catalyst: Once you have obtained the catalyst for “Pathfinder”, you need to kill 700 enemies with the “Pathfinder” pistol. Killing other Guardians with it grants you extra progress.
This is what the “Pathfinder” Catalyst can do: The weapon generates Spheres of Power as a Masterwork. Additionally, it also gains the perk “The Rock”.
- After the last shot, secondary fire can be activated, consuming a portion of your ammunition reserves.
- Your next grenade will also be transformed into a cluster grenade.
Cool Halo effect: Your grenade will thus transform into one of the original Halo grenades.
