With a new expansion, the maximum power level traditionally increases – this is also the case with Destiny 2: Beyond Light. Additionally, there are some other changes regarding power levels to consider.
What is the new max power level? New expansions or seasons traditionally not only bring new weapons, armor, or activities to Destiny 2 but also an increase in the power level. Therefore, it is always necessary to raise the “power” of your guardian and prepare them for new endgame content and challenging challenges.
When is the change coming? Accordingly, the release of Destiny 2: Beyond Light and the Season 12 will raise the power level cap – and this applies to all guardians.
The new power level caps will come into play on November 10, after Beyond Light and the season of the hunt have gone live.
These are the new power level caps:
- Soft Cap: Power level 1,200
- Hard Cap: Power level 1,250
- Pinnacle Cap: Power level 1,260
If you complete the campaign and the story missions as well as some additional quests and activities, you should easily reach the soft cap. Then you’ll need to earn powerful rewards to advance your power up to the hard cap. From there, especially dedicated guardians can achieve the pinnacle cap by collecting rare pinnacle rewards.
In Season 12, you will also receive a new artifact. In the past, this seasonal item leveled up separately and provided the player with an additional power boost. With enough playtime, it was possible to reach an even higher overall level – this should still work the same way in Beyond Light.

Minimum power level is raised: As soon as you log into the new season for the first time, all weapons and armor of your guardians will automatically be raised to power level 1,050. If you already own items above power level 1,050, their level will remain unchanged.
By the way, all new guardians will also start at power level 1,050.
More options for power gain: For some time now, many players have demanded that they be able to earn powerful rewards from the activities they enjoy the most.
Bungie will meet the guardians halfway on November 10. In addition to other sources, there will also be the possibility to earn powerful rewards through strikes, in Gambit, Crucible, and through seasonal drops – up to the hard cap.
Although it will still be much faster if you diligently farm all powerful reward sources every week, anyone who prefers to only play strikes or Crucible matches can also earn powerful rewards that way.
No more power through tokens: Especially at the beginning of new content, players could quickly level up with many tokens by playing a little and then exchanging their tokens with NPCs like Lord Shaxx for gear with current power levels. This was one of the fastest and most effective ways to increase their power level. But that will soon come to an end.
Starting with Season 12, gear obtained from collections or for tokens will have a lower power level than in previous seasons. Thus, items that are obtained with tokens will be 20 power levels below your level. Gear from collections will also be capped at power level 1,050.
