In Destiny 2 the Season of Dawn has begun and you must hunt your enemies through time. We will tell you how the activity Sundial works and what you can get out of it.
This activity is about: The new seasonal activity is called ‘the Sundial’ (eng. the Sundial). The huge apparatus was built by Osiris on Mercury. From there, you will embark on a time travel with up to six Guardians and fix the broken timeline.
The Sundial has a player matchmaking system, so you will automatically be assigned support. Similar to the Vex Offensive. The PvE activity is primarily structured similarly to the popular Menagerie. The activity is available to you until March 2020.
How do you unlock the Sundial? To repair the time fabric together with Osiris and stand up to the Cabal, you must use the Sundial.
However, the activity cannot be tackled immediately. First, you must complete some tasks:
- Visit Ikora Ray in the Tower and receive the quest ‘A Matter of Time’ (eng. a Matter of Time).
- Ikora will send you to her former teacher Osiris on Mercury.
- Osiris wants you to help him repair the Sundial. He will send you to the Corridors of Time. There you need to kill Cabal. Solar weapon kills will give you the most progress.
- Now head to the Obelisk in the Corridors of Time (Thieves’ Landing). Deliver the spare parts to the construct.
- Next, you must eliminate enemies with your Super or abilities. Use the Event Flags to charge all abilities at once.
- Now visit the Obelisk again. Now you have successfully connected the machine to the Sundial.
- Make your way to the Sundial and successfully complete a run in the activity.
What is the deal with the Obelisks? Not only in the Corridors of Time can Guardians connect an Obelisk to the Sundial. There is also such an apparatus waiting for the uplink on Mars. Next week, Obelisks will join in the EDZ and on Nessus. This is revealed by the roadmap for Season 9.
You can also level up the Obelisks. To do this, you use the new currency Fractaline. You receive this through:
- Completion of quests from Osiris’ tasks,
- Runs in the Sundial and
- Loot missions that you receive at the Obelisks themselves.
If an Obelisk levels up, you gain access to additional loot and resource boosters for individual activities or locations. Each Obelisk includes:
- Two weapons inspired by Saint-14.
- Additionally, each Obelisk offers a so-called Weapon of the Lost Time. These are old weapons with new perk options.
- Unique mods
If you successfully connect an Obelisk to the Sundial through smaller tasks, this link will remain permanent unless you manually remove the connection. You can do this in the bottom right of the Obelisk menu.
What else do the different Obelisks provide? Simply put: They determine what loot you receive from the Sundial. More on that later.

Help, the Cabal have stolen time
This is how the Sundial activity works: To prevent the Cabal from reversing our victory during the Red War, we must prove ourselves in the Sundial. With the help of the time machine, Osiris sends us into different encounters until we face a boss.
As already mentioned, you can start the activity from orbit. If you don’t have a full fireteam, players will be assigned automatically.
The sequence of the individual encounters is not fixed, but there are a handful of different mini-missions in which you land randomly.
Included are among others:
- Fights against hostile hordes,
- Sometimes you will need to secure or hold certain areas,
- and periodically mini-bosses will be waiting for you.
- Another encounter features enemies that are immune. You must first break through their shield using mechanics.
If you successfully fought in the different encounters and collected enough points, it’s boss fight time. Only after the main villain has been defeated have you completed the Sundial.
The Sundial changes: Community Manager Deej said during the presentation of the activity: “Your first experience with the Sundial will certainly not be like the last one.” A look at the roadmap confirms this.
In the coming weeks, a new end boss will debut weekly in the Sundial. Also in the new year, a new Cabal Psion is waiting for its appearance as the big villain.
On January 7, the Hard Mode for the Sundial will also start. Currently, not much is known about it. We only know that automatic player matching will be disabled. So you will have to put together a strong team yourself.
These rewards are worth the effort: What loot you receive for completing a run of the Sundial depends on the Obelisks. The currently connected Obelisk determines what you get.
We remember that each Obelisk offers two new ‘Saint-14’ weapons to choose from. These two weapons go into the loot pool of the Sundial when the Obelisk is connected. After a run, you can choose one of them with random rolls.
Currently available are:
- The auto rifle Steel Feather Repeater (Corridors of Time Obelisk)
- The pistol Break the Light (Corridors of Time Obelisk)
- The linear fusion rifle Line in the Sand (Mars Obelisk)
- The grenade launcher Vengeance of the Martyr (Mars Obelisk)
