In Destiny 2 a secret location has been discovered, which seems to be related to an Exotic: The Thorn 2.0 – the Malfeasance.
Note: This article is full of spoilers for a quest that has been active since September 25. This is our guide on how to obtain the Malfeasance.
Where was the location discovered? This weekend, a reddit user posted a strange gameplay bug he encountered in Destiny 2: When he died in the strike “The Corrupted”, he did not spawn in the normal strike area, but at a previously unknown location. After two seconds, however, he was removed from that location by the game and brought back to his teammates.
This is what this secret location looks like: Numerous Guardians immediately teamed up on reddit to find a way to this location. Many recognized from the “shadow” on the back rock that it is an important place that needs to be visited for an Exotic.
How to reach the secret location: The clever community did not take long to find a way into this room. Currently, there is no “normal” way to get there, but this place can be accessed through elaborate jumping passages. We will embed a video about it here.
You have to start the strike “The Corrupted” in the Dreaming City:
This is Callum’s Grave, the burial site of Callum
What kind of place is this? The Guardians are sure that this is Callum’s Grave.
How do we know this? In the databases, there is an exotic hand cannon named “Malfeasance”. So far, no Guardian has possessed this Exotic, as it is tied to a quest that is not yet available.
Data mining has shown that the first quest step for Malfeasance is to find a weapon component in Callum’s Grave. Since then, the Guardians have been eagerly searching all of Destiny 2 to find Callum’s Grave.
Through the gameplay bug from the reddit user, the community received the hint that Callum’s Grave is located in this strike. And now the place has been successfully found.
However, the weapon component has not been discovered, so the quest cannot be started.
Who is Callum?
Why are we sure this is Callum’s Grave? What you see on the wall is most likely an imprint of how Callum died: Callum was a Guardian who was with the Wanderer (the Gambit leader). He was known as a follower of the “Shadows of Yor”. This group of Guardians idolized Dredgen Yor – the owner of the Exotic Thorn. Dredgen Yor was certainly corrupted by darkness and was considered an enemy of humanity.
The Shadows of Yor attempt to create replicas of the Thorn and are very interested in darkness.
Callum himself was killed by Shin Malphur. Shin Malphur is an exciting character as he is the only known Guardian who received his ghost from another Guardian who previously died and thus became a Guardian himself. He became a revolver-wielding Hunter who took the hand cannon The Last Word. He killed Dredgen Yor and is now a Hunter of the Shadows of Yor.
That is why he also killed Callum.
This is how Callum died: Shortly before Callum’s death, he had a fierce dispute with his ghost. His ghost disagreed with Callum’s actions. Then Callum destroyed his ghost with a knife. At that moment, Shin Malphur shot Callum with his Golden Gun.
According to a lore entry, Shin Malphur ignited his fire and painted him on the wall without saying a word.
In Callum’s Grave now lies a destroyed ghost before the imprint on the wall – which is why we are sure this is Callum’s Grave.
The Wanderer has his hands in all of this
According to data mining results, Callum stole the weapon component that needs to be found from the Wanderer. In the quest, you need to return it to the Wanderer.
Another quest step is to kill a Malfeasance boss in a Gambit match. At the end of the quest line, you will receive the Exotic “Malfeasance” from the Wanderer.
This is a lore-rich quest line, which likely hints at future events in Destiny 2. At the end of one quest step, it says: The Wanderer sees something special in you. You are unlike the other Guardians. You are wilder, stronger, and perhaps a bit meaner than the others.
Additionally, there is the following information at another quest completion: The Drifter warns you that his old enemy, the man with the Golden Gun, may come looking for you. You are guilty not only because of your affiliation but also because of your actions.
In other words, if we possess the Exotic Malfeasance, Shin Malphur is probably after us. Because he hunts everyone who possesses replicas of the Thorn. And the Malfeasance is such a replica.
According to the Year 2 roadmap, there will be a content update for season pass owners in spring related to the Wanderer and Gambit. We may encounter Shin Malphur then…
What can Malfeasance do in Destiny 2?
Malfeasance is an exotic hand cannon with a fire rate of 180 and a damage of 78. These are the stats:
These perks define Malfeasance:
- Explosive Shadow: Fires corrupted rounds that burrow into an enemy. If enough rounds are stacked, they explode.
- Possessed Thief: Bonus damage against possessed enemies and Gambit invaders.
In the lore tab of the weapon, the Wanderer speaks to you: “Long ago, I sought a replacement for a weapon called ‘Thorn.’ It is not a replacement, but for me, it is better. We built it together. And when we all hold one of these in our hands? Then even the man with the Golden Gun should stop. Perhaps we cannot shoot faster than he can. Perhaps no one can. But when we all shoot together? Then we don’t have to be faster than he. Then he will die too.”
By the way: The Thorn was a powerful weapon in Destiny 1, which dominated towards the end of Year 1 in PvP. It was known as the “Poison Needle.”
What do you think of all this information? It leaves plenty of room for speculation.
Update September 26: We have linked our guide to the Malfeasance above in the article.
