The current Season 8 of Destiny 2 is not over yet, but clever Guardians have already discovered a cool new Hunter combo of an exotic and a new ability that could be a hit in PvP next season.
What have Guardians discovered? In the lead-up to the upcoming Season of the Dawn, the 9th season of Destiny 2, clever Guardians have stumbled upon a combination involving an exotic armor piece and an ability that has the potential to significantly ruin the mood of some opponents in the Crucible.
Many are looking forward to trying out this combo. The relevant Reddit post has already received over 5,200 upvotes in just 18 hours.
This is the combo: It consists of
- the exotic Hunter helmet Assassin’s Cowl, which was introduced in Shadowkeep during Season 8
- and the Gunslinger Hunter ability Weighted Knife. This ability, however, will only be available in Season 9 – as part of the extensive sandbox changes to the Solar classes of the Guardians.
What makes this combo so exciting? The combo has not yet been tested live, but in the eyes of many Guardians, it is very promising. The exotic armor and the new ability create an interesting synergy that allows Hunters to play in an assassin-like style.
What Weighted Knife can do: The knife deals high damage and is thrown not immediately, but after a long preparation. It flies with high speed, bounces once, and deals additional head damage. Precision kill melee attacks fully recharge the melee attack. Precision one-hit kills in PvP.
What the Assassin’s Cowl can do: The exotic perk is called Quiet Execution. If you defeat a Guardian with a melee attack or an enemy with a finisher, this helmet grants you invisibility and restores part of your health and shields.
What many Hunters are looking forward to: With the new ability, the throwing knife can kill with just one precision hit in PvP – just that is already a powerful tool in the right hands. With the helmet, skilled knife throwers can take this playstyle to the next level.
This throwing knife ability counts as a melee attack. So if you land a one-hit kill with the knife, the exotic Hunter helmet makes you invisible, allowing you to sneak up on your next victim with a fully charged melee ability.
What you should also consider: To use this ability, you will need to select the Golden Gun with 3 shots – that is, the Way of the Sharpshooter. There may therefore be 3 shots missing in the super that could be valuable in PvP, as some Guardians complain.
However, all 6 shots are rarely needed. Moreover, the 6-shot Golden Gun will be slightly nerfed next season. The damage falloff range will be reduced, it is intended to fight at shorter distances. At greater distances, you may need to shoot once more to finish off the enemy.
The 3-shot super, on the other hand, is supposed to become a bit more attractive. The range and reliability with auto-aim will be increased.
So the 3-shot Golden Gun and thus the new throwing knife could also be a viable alternative for the Crucible.
When does the new Season 9 start? What this combo is really worth can only be tested in Season 9. Because the new knife ability will only be introduced with the sandbox changes. These are expected to be implemented at the beginning of Season 9 as part of a major update.
The exact start date of Season 9 is currently not known. However, we do know that Season 8 officially ends on December 10. The odds are high that Season 9 will start immediately thereafter, also on December 10 – after the weekly reset.
What do you think about this combo? Does it have potential in your eyes? Will you try it out too? Or is this just a lot of noise about nothing? Have you recognized other combinations that could dominate next season?
