The Chalice of Opulence is a central feature of the new Season 7 of Destiny 2. But how does the Chalice actually work? How can you upgrade it and how do you earn the necessary Emperor’s Coins? How do you get more Runes and use them correctly? We answer all these questions in our comprehensive Chalice guide.
What is the Chalice of Opulence? With Season 7, Destiny has gained another 6-player activity in addition to the raids – The Menagerie. In this, you will prove your worth before Cabal Emperor Calus and can grab various loot in the Menagerie.
A key role is played by the so-called Chalice of Opulence. This is an item that you need to assemble and upgrade. After that, this Chalice will serve as a source for always better gear that you can earn through the Menagerie. According to Bungie, this is a new way to obtain the best gear in the game.

How this Chalice roughly works can be read here: With this Chalice, you will soon get some of the best gear pieces from Destiny 2
In this guide, we explain all you need to know about the Chalice of Opulence, its upgrades, the corresponding Runes, the new currency “Emperor’s Coins”, its loot and Rune mechanics, and how to use the Chalice.
Getting the Chalice of Opulence – Here’s how
This is how you get the Chalice: First, you need to actually get the Chalice. This is quite easy and basically self-explanatory.
- First, visit the robot Benedict 90-44 in the Tower. He is now located in a new position, but he is marked for you with a quest marker.
- You will receive the introductory quest for the Menagerie from him. This will get you to Power Level 690 (if you are not there yet) and lead you to the Chalice.
- The quest will then take you to Nessus, where you should find Calus’ Barge. This is also marked and easy to find.
- Speak to Werner 99-40 there and follow the simple quest steps to assemble the Chalice.
- Once you have assembled the Chalice, you should upgrade it.
Upgrading the Chalice of Opulence – Here’s how
If you want to upgrade the Chalice, just follow these steps:
The first bounty “Glorious Harvest”: Once you have assembled the Chalice, you will receive a bounty from Werner 99-40 called Glorious Harvest. Grab it and complete it. For this, you need to generate Orbs of Light, gain experience, and master any challenge such as a strike – somewhere in the world of Destiny 2.
Treasure Hunt: If you have completed the bounty, you will receive an Imperial Treasure Map. This will tell you where to go – namely to Nessus. There you should recover a treasure. If you go to the planet view of Nessus, the location on the map is marked with a cross.
You can see how to get there in this video:
Using Runes: When you open the treasure chest, you will receive your first Rune. Werner 99-40 will ask you to insert it into the Chalice. Simply interact with the Chalice and place it in the corresponding slot (at the top).
Completing the Menagerie: Now you need to complete a round of Menagerie. Select the activity from the Nessus map by the Leviathan. Once you have successfully finished a match, you will inevitably unlock some triumphs. You can find these in the Triumph menu under Objectives/Sub-objectives/Menagerie. Redeem them and you will receive your first Emperor’s Coins, which you need for upgrading the Chalice and for quest progress.
The Upgrade: In the next step, Werner will ask you to upgrade the Chalice. Since you currently only have 1,000 Emperor’s Coins, you can only unlock one upgrade node of the Chalice – namely Power and Effect I at the bottom right in the Chalice view.
The final step: Now you need to open a chest on Calus’ Barge. They are located on the rear deck of the ship. Opening one costs 5,000 Glimmer. Open one and speak to Werner again. Then you are done and can finally earn more Emperor’s Coins and further upgrade the Chalice according to your priorities.
This is how you earn Emperor’s Coins for the Chalice of Opulence
What are these coins all about? The Emperor’s Coins are essential for further upgrades of the Chalice. Each node that you want to unlock costs you a certain amount of this currency. Prices vary between 2,500 and 8,000 Emperor’s Coins.
But how do you get this currency? There are several ways:
- One of the easiest methods is the bounties from Werner 99-40, which will allow you to receive more treasure chests. These contain additional Emperor’s Coins.
- Another way to earn Emperor’s Coins is through the triumphs of the Menagerie, and there are quite a few. Check them out so you know what to do. The tasks range from eliminating a specific boss to using Runes to earning complete Menagerie weapon sets. Also, bounties from Werner unlock some triumphs.
- If you have a lot of Glimmer, you can open additional chests for 5,000 Glimmer each on the back deck of the Nessus Barge. You can also get Emperor’s Coins there. Once you’ve opened them all, you’ll need to wait until the next reset.
- Additionally, you can earn more Emperor’s Coins through a specific upgrade of the Chalice – namely through Power and Effect II (3,000 Emperor’s Coins). This will earn you an additional weekly reward in the completion chest of the Menagerie, and various playlist activities like strikes, PvP, or Gambit will now yield additional Emperor’s Coins.
- The item “Imperial Wealth” (1,500 Glimmer + 10 legendary shards) from Werner 99-40 is also very helpful if you want to earn more Emperor’s Coins. This item significantly increases your chances of receiving Emperor’s Coins in Gambit, PvP, the Menagerie, or in Strikes – until you get them there.
Using the Chalice of Opulence correctly – Here’s how you determine your loot
This is how the Chalice mechanics work: After you have assembled the Chalice and made the first upgrade, you can insert additional Runes there and thus get loot by playing the Menagerie. At the end of a Menagerie match, you will receive equipment that you have somewhat determined through your Rune choice.
Each Rune has an influence on what kind of item you get and how its properties turn out – depending on the type and arrangement of Runes in the Chalice.

This is how you get Runes for the Chalice of Opulence
What are Runes all about? Runes are the most important ingredient on the way to new loot with the Chalice of Opulence. In short: No Runes, no good loot.
This is how you get Runes: You can earn Runes by
- completing weekly bounties from Werner
- opening the weekly chests on Calus’ Barge
- using the Rune Finder – a new consumable item from Werner 99-40. This item increases your chance of scoring additional Runes in strikes, Gambit, or the Crucible after use. If other members of your fireteam activate the Rune Finder, the chance increases additionally.
- unlocking the Chalice upgrade Rune Bonus (bottom middle in the Chalice view, 1,500 Glimmer + 10 legendary shards). This will give you additional Runes from bounties or through the Rune Finder.
The Chalice can hold up to three Runes at the same time. Once you have fresh Runes, you can socket them in various combinations into the Chalice. Then it’s back into the Menagerie to earn new items.
This is how you unlock more types of Runes for the Chalice of Opulence
This is what you need to do to unlock more types of Runes: You keep getting the same types of Runes and wonder why? To gain access to additional types of Runes – namely the red, green, and blue – you need to unlock the Chalice upgrades Rune Compatibility I-III. You can find them at the bottom left in the Chalice view. The prices are:
- Rune Compatibility I – 2,500 Emperor’s Coins
- Rune Compatibility II – 3,500 Emperor’s Coins
- Rune Compatibility III – 6,000 Emperor’s Coins
