In Destiny 2, the Guardians are in fierce competition with each other. We take a look at the most important event mechanics and explain everything about laurels, medals, and how you can quickly gain progress in the Guardian Games.
These are the Guardian Games: The current spring event has basically brought the Olympic Games to Destiny. You have 3 weeks to show in competitions that either Warlocks, Titans, or Hunters are the most dedicated Guardians.
If your Guardian class stands on the winner’s podium at the end of the Guardian Games 2020, you will be celebrated in the Tower for an entire year. By the way, you are not only fighting for glory and honor, but also for rewards. One of them is the new event exotic:
Throughout the competition, you should never forget to wear your event class emblem. Only this way can you secure the necessary medals and laurels that we will cover in this guide.
All about Laurels in Competition
This is how Laurels work: In the Guardian Games, you cannot avoid the special event laurels. Many triumphs and medals require you to generate and collect these.
You create laurels through ability kills, meaning you eliminate enemies with grenades, charged melee, or your super. If you defeat an enemy like that, they drop a glowing pyramid.
In most PvE activities, you have to actively collect laurels before they dissolve. In the Crucible and Gambit, they are collected automatically.
Collect Laurels from your team: You can benefit not only from your own laurels but also from your team’s. If your colleagues achieve an ability kill, enemies drop the coveted items – they don’t even have to be in the same fireteam as you.
However, note that laurels from other Guardian classes only grant you 1 point. If you collect ones from the same class, you gain threefold progress.
- Warlocks generate golden laurels
- Titans generate red laurels
- Hunters generate blue laurels
If you play as a Warlock, you should ideally play with other Warlocks. If you have to decide, prefer to collect the corresponding laurels for your class to maximize your gains.
These builds help you: Since you can earn laurels in all activities, we cannot offer a comprehensive laurel build. However, we will introduce an exotic and useful mods for each class that will significantly ease the hunt for event items.
Focus on these exotics for ability kills:
- Warlocks: Crown of Storms – The exotic helm refills all abilities with Arc kills and extends the duration of your Stormtrance
- Titans: An Unbreakable Titan Helmet – You gain health for kills with melee abilities and conveniently fully recharge your melee
- Hunters: Shinobu’s Vow – The exotic gloves give you a second jump grenade, increase its effectiveness, and grant grenade energy on hits
To make the exotics even more effective, you should complement them with powerful mods. In parentheses, we indicate where you can find the mods:
- Thunder Coil: Increased Arc melee damage and grants super energy on finishers (Artifact mod Season 10)
- The Lightning Strikes Twice: If you throw Arc grenades, you automatically receive a better grenade cooldown, extended by Arc kills (Artifact mod Season 10)
- Waves of Tyranny: Damage from Arc abilities spawns a Warmind Cell (Artifact mod Season 10)
- Warmind Light: If you pick up a Warmind Cell, you will be charged with Light (Reward in the Seraph Bunker)
- Firepower: Gain grenade energy back, consumes a charge of Light (Season 9 Obelisk Mod, available for purchase at Banshee-44 in Season 10)
The class exotics combined with the mods ensure that you always have an Arc ability ready at hand and these can even be enhanced. The Warmind Cells this time serve only as energy providers, as their powerful explosions do not count as ability kills.
Where can you collect Laurels? In principle, you can collect laurels anywhere in Destiny 2. However, you should not just play wildly, but ideally keep an eye on the requirements for loot activities, medals, and triumphs.
While it is quite clear which activities are meant for PvP or Strikes, some Guardians wonder what is behind “Destinations”. This refers to almost all public areas:
- Patrol Areas
- Escalation Protocol
- The Reckoning
- Ascendant Challenge
- Seraph Tower Event
However, Raids do not seem to count as a destination. Theoretically, you could farm laurels there, but you won’t kill two birds with one stone.
The event quest “On your marks, get set, go!” requires you to collect a lot of laurels. Fortunately, it does not matter where the laurels come from. As a reward, you get the exotic Ghost shells, which also come with the useful XP buff of 10%.
Medals bring your class victory in competition
What are Event Medals? During the Guardian Games 2020, you can earn competition medals. These come in true Olympic fashion as bronze, silver, or gold variants.
To show off a medal, you have to earn it. To do this, visit Eva Levante in the Tower. She has daily rotating medal quests in her inventory. Per character, you automatically receive a gold medal for the introductory quest of the Guardian Games without much effort.
The tasks are usually tied to specific activities – such as forging or Gambit. Depending on the rarity, the quests require varying amounts of effort. In other words, for a gold medal, you have to achieve significantly more kills, laurels, or loot activities than for a bronze counterpart.
Why you should turn in medals: Directly behind Eva Levante in the Tower, you will see a pedestal with three flags. There you must turn in your hard-earned medals and thus achieve progress for your class during the Guardian Games. The trophies in your inventory do not bring victory to you or your team.
The flags serve as indicators of who is leading in the competition. In our example image, the Warlock flag is raised the highest. They have currently collected and turned in the most medals.
By turning in your awards in the Tower, you will receive an event reward based on rarity. This may include resources or gear.
On reddit , some Guardians report that their medals disappear after 24 hours. This seems to be a bug. Others claim that the medals are in the inventory as they should be, just that the corresponding quest disappears from the menu after completion. To ensure that your hard work was not in vain, simply turn them in as intended.
Farm Laurels quickly for Triumphs and Quests
This is how you farm laurels the fastest: In the Destiny week from April 21 to April 28, you can quickly earn laurels with a little trick. This is made possible by the current Ascendant Challenge. However, you will need at least one other Guardian for the laurel farm.
Then head to the Dreaming City, use your Queen’s Leaf Tincture and start the Garden Challenge. In the center of the map, there is a field that instantly refills your abilities – including your super.
Play the mission normally and collect all orbs. Then take out 2 of the 3 final knights, and now it gets tricky:
- One player lures the final knight far away from the center, preferably to one of the high cliffs
- The bait jumps off the map and spawns near the entrance portal of the challenge
- Now enter the portal, and at that exact moment, all the remaining guardians defeat themselves – thus the knight loses all interest in your fireteam
- All guardians enter the challenge and the farming begins
The small Shadow enemies spawn continuously in the center of the map and can be eliminated in seconds with the always charged supers. You will quickly swim in laurels and complete, for example, the exotic quest for the event ghost shells in less than 15 minutes.
