With Forsaken, long-awaited changes are coming to the controversial weapon system of Destiny 2. In the combat live stream, Bungie provided a closer look at the new weapon slot mechanics and clarified some previously known details.

After Bungie has already provided fragmented information on the upcoming changes to the weapon slots multiple times, fans now got a closer look at this system in action. Additionally, some uncertainties have been resolved.
The new weapon slots in Forsaken – ammunition as the most important factor
Developers provide clarity: So far, Bungie’s announcements about the new weapon system of Forsaken have caused more confusion than clarity. During the recently held combat stream, the studio was able to clarify some questions.
So, in Forsaken, there will still be kinetic, energy, and power slots for weapons. However, the different weapon categories will not be strictly bound to the individual weapon slots with some exceptions. Additionally, whether a weapon inflicts elemental damage will no longer be a decisive factor for slot selection.
Rather, ammunition will increasingly act as a limiting factor, largely determining the distribution of weapons.

This is how the arsenal in Forsaken is distributed across ammunition types and weapon slots
Primary/white ammunition:
- Assault rifles – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Pulse rifles – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Hand cannons – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Submachine guns – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Pistols – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Scout rifles – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Bows – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Exotic grenade launcher The Lion’s Roar
Special/green ammunition:
- Fusion rifles – can be used in energy slot
- Shotguns – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Sniper rifles – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Single-shot grenade launchers – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Trace rifles – can be used in kinetic and energy slot
- Exotic bow Trinity Ghoul
Heavy/purple ammunition:
- Rocket launchers – can be used in power slot
- Swords – can be used in power slot
- Multi-shot grenade launchers – can be used in power slot
- Linear fusion rifles – can be used in power slot (only seen in power slot so far)
- Exotic power weapons – can be used in power slot

Note: Some sniper rifles and shotguns will also be used in part in the power slot. However, these are currently only exotic examples of these weapon types. Regardless, every weapon used in the power slot will require heavy ammunition. Confirmed so far in the power slot:
- D.A.R.C.I.
- Legend of Acrius
- tractor cannon
- Whisper of the Wyrm
3 shotguns possible, but rather impractical: As previously announced, it will indeed be possible to play with, for example, three shotguns or three grenade launchers.
However, for this you need, on one hand, an exotic shotgun (Legend of Acrius). On the other hand, the other two shotguns will need green ammunition in the kinetic and energy slots. With such a setup, you will probably face ammo shortages much faster than with a “more traditional” weapon choice.

By the way: In the Crucible, you spawn with 2 shots for weapons that require special ammunition. An exception are trace rifles, which start with 40 energy.
If you use two weapons that consume special ammunition, each will only get one shot. Additionally, eliminated Guardians drop special ammunition if they carried any beforehand.
All current weapons will already be assigned their new slots with patch 2.0.0 on August 28.
What do you think of the new weapon slot system? Are you happy with the new orientation or do you think it’s not the great freedom that was promised to players?
