Bungie casually announced the loot shooter Destiny 2 for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Now the community is speculating about possible next-gen optimizations and the impact on a potential Destiny 3.
This has been announced by Bungie: The development studio reacted to a tweet from Microsoft. Microsoft stated that hundreds of games are currently in development for the Xbox Series X. In response, Bungie tweeted, “Destiny 2 will also be released on next-gen platforms. Details to follow.”
So we don’t know when the game will be released for the next-gen consoles PS5 and Xbox Series X, or what optimizations it will receive, but we do know that it will definitely be released.
Destiny players hope for 60 FPS on PS5 and Xbox Series X
How are the players reacting? Surprisingly, the community of the loot shooter Destiny 2 does not find this unexpected. After all, rumors about this surfaced as early as June 2019, and it seems logical that Bungie wants to be present with an online game on the upcoming consoles.
The players hope that at least a consistent 60 fps will be achieved on PS5 and Xbox Series X.

- Metatermin8r on reddit hopes for a specific improvement: “I expect at least a 60fps patch. Frankly, it’s incomprehensible why we don’t have that yet for Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. Both could handle it.”
- TVPaulD is skeptical on reddit about improvements: “A 60 Hz version would make it impossible to play with players who have old hardware. They would probably then allow crossplay with PS5, Xbox Series X, PC, and Google Stadia to increase the population.”
Destiny 3 seems far away – Some doubt it will even come
What about Destiny 3? The release of Destiny 2 on PS5 and Xbox Series X raises the question of what is happening with a release of Destiny 3? According to the grand master plan for Destiny, the launch of Destiny 3 should have long been overdue. Originally, a Destiny title was supposed to be relevant for only 2 years before the next one would appear. Destiny 3 was originally supposed to be released in 2017.
But that plan has changed a long time ago: We know that Bungie still has plans for year 4 (and beyond) in Destiny 2. Currently, we are in year 3 with Shadowkeep. A lot of content is still planned for the current game. Therefore, there are no concrete statements regarding Destiny 3 yet. Nevertheless, Destiny 2 is subject to technical limitations of the current console generation:
Bungie has also stated: Destiny 2 cannot continue to grow indefinitely like this.
The community is now speculating about what the announcement of Destiny 2 for PS5 and Xbox Series X could mean for the release of part 3. That Destiny 3 will not come immediately with the launch of PS5 and Xbox Series X has been known since February 2020:

- Asami97 believes on reddit that we will just have to wait longer: “Destiny 3 will come, either in 2022 or 2023. Bungie wouldn’t have paid so much for the rights to the brand if they were going to stick with D2 indefinitely.”
Destiny 2 recently faced some criticism regarding cheating and the Trials. Bungie is aware of this and announced improvements. Initial plans are already known.
