According to Activision, the first DLC for Destiny 2 was more successful than the first DLC for Destiny 1.
In the latest financial report for the fourth quarter of 2017, Activision discussed the successes of the past months and presented key milestones for 2018 to investors.
In addition to Call of Duty, Overwatch, or Candy Crush, it also discussed Destiny 2. The MMO shooter achieved the second highest revenue in North America as a console game – in this category, by the way, CoD WW2 holds the first place worldwide. Moreover, the publisher emphasizes the successful launch of Destiny 2 on PC.
After that, Activision shared some information about the expansion “Curse of Osiris”.
Curse of Osiris performed better than Darkness Falls
According to Activision, the attach rate of the first Destiny 2 DLC Curse of Osiris was higher than that of Darkness Falls, the first Destiny 1 DLC.
The attach rate is expressed as a measure of how many buyers of a product also acquire the subsequent products.
This means that a higher proportion of Destiny 2 guardians bought Curse of Osiris than Destiny 1 guardians bought Darkness Falls.
In this regard, Activision continues that they have not yet succeeded in sustainably expanding the Destiny community. But Bungie is working hard to improve the game.
The Destiny community is engaged, vocal, and passionate, and improvements have already been made based on their feedback. In the future, a whole list of new features and seasonal events will be coming to the Guardians. Furthermore, it is emphasized that with the second DLC in May and a large expansion at the end of the year, two “epic adventures” are on the horizon.
There is a certain magic in the Destiny franchise, and they feel committed to meeting their own expectations and those of the players in the coming quarters, according to Activision.
Players find Curse of Osiris not so successful
As for why Curse of Osiris sold better than Darkness Falls, Activision did not elaborate. Some Guardians see the main reason as many players bought Destiny 2 along with the season pass, which included Curse of Osiris directly.
According to some users, the success cannot be attributed to the quality of Curse of Osiris. The DLC story can be completed in 2 hours, the Infinite Forest does not provide long-term motivation, and while the new raid area is cool, it also does not offer long-term motivation.
The Crota raid from Darkness Falls, on the other hand, was played repeatedly for weeks and months after its release, recall Destiny veterans.
Activision is confident that motivation will return among the Guardians. The expansions scheduled for May and the end of the year present opportunities to win back players who are currently turning their backs on Destiny 2. Because the players are incredibly passionate – and this passion is a good thing, even though the current sentiment is critical.
