For two years, players in Destiny 2 have been using a clever trick that granted them unlimited ammunition. But what appeared to be a desired feature is actually a bug, and Bungie has announced a fix for it in Season 22.
What bug are we talking about? Since the introduction of unlimited primary ammunition in Destiny 2 in Season 15, a handy bug allowed guardians to generate ammunition from thin air when using a double special weapon combination.
For example, combining a waveform grenade launcher with a fusion rifle currently allows players to ensure that they never run out of ammunition in Destiny 2.
- Specifically, when equipping double special ammunition weapons, more heavy ammunition drops than intended.
- Additionally, once you run out of ammunition, Destiny 2 randomly fills your magazine with a variable amount of special and heavy ammunition.
- This handy “trick” has been particularly popular in PvE and has almost become the standard approach there.
But that might soon come to an end. Bungie announced over the weekend in the Massive Breakdown Podcast that this “is not what we expect as the preferred playstyle.”
“Not what we expect as the preferred playstyle”
Here’s what Bungie said about the adjustment: In the podcast, “Mercules,” Bungie’s Associate Weapons Designer, commented on the special PvE meta in Destiny 2 and whether it is intended.
It is not intended. […] The idea that players, for instance, use a waveform grenade launcher and a fusion rifle and never have ammunition shortage is not really what Bungie wants to see as the preferred playstyle in endgame PvE.
explained Bungie’s Associate Weapons Designer in the podcast
He confirmed that the bug occurred when primary weapons received unlimited ammunition in Season 15, causing more heavy ammunition to drop in PvE when using two special weapons. This bug will be addressed in Season 22.
Additionally, they want to observe how the changes will affect PvE.
We will observe how the changes to heavy ammunition will affect gameplay in Season 22. We believe it will not have much influence, but we will keep an eye on potential future changes.
That’s why the change could still hurt: The adjustment could have significant impacts on many guardians who have enjoyed and vigorously utilized the previous advantages. From Season 22 onward, it seems that players will have to manage their ammunition much more tactically and consciously.
Bungie explains in the podcast that special weapons in the current sandbox of Destiny 2 are rather meant for “burst damage phases” against bosses or champions, which should be combined with complementary primary and heavy weapons.
What does the community say about the changes? Players have already discussed this announcement in the Reddit.
IronsideZer0 says:
So we have bosses with way too much health, ammo finder mods that are absolutely useless, and now the double special weapon setup doesn’t work anymore? Bungie’s obvious campaign against fun continues unabated.

AnthonyMiqo, on the other hand, is not bothered by the adjustments if Bungie also adjusts something else: “I have nothing against the change. In my opinion, it’s really not that important. But a slight increase in the drop rate of heavy ammunition or a slight increase in the amount of heavy ammunition you receive from picking up ammo packs (through an ammo finder) wouldn’t hurt.”
What do you think about Bungie’s decision to fix the “double special ammo” bug in Season 22? Do the adjustments impact your PvE gameplay? Then feel free to comment and share your thoughts in the comments.
In addition to this adjustment, Season 22 will bring further changes. These also include adjustments to the economy:
