This weapon is about: Felwinter’s Lie (Felwinter’s Lie) is a Legendary shotgun for the energy slot. It fires slowly but hits hard. The weapon intrinsically has the new trait “Shot Package”, which makes the spread even. Moreover, Felwinter’s Lie always comes with the same perks, and that’s a true blessing.
Every player always receives the identical, powerful version of the weapon – you don’t need luck or pray for a good roll on each drop. For this reason, experts say that Felwinter’s is the new top dog in the shotgun territory.

Felwinter’s Lie in Practical Test
How the weapon performs in PvP: In the Crucible, the shotgun makes an incredibly good impression. This is due to the excellent perks and the maximum one-shot range of 8 to 9 meters – that’s absolutely top and is not achieved by any other traditional shotgun.
The competition in the same archetype reaches about 7.5 to 8.5 meters. Faster-firing shotguns can only take out Guardians with one shot up to 7.5 meters.
The range is made possible by:
- Full Choke: Narrows projectile spread (but reduces precision damage)
- Aggressive Rounds: +10 range
- Range Masterwork: +10 range
- Shot Package – The even spread takes a large part of the infamous shotgun luck
The weapon eliminates luck in two ways. You always receive a very similar shot pattern and don’t have to worry about getting a good roll.
Every perk has its place: Felwinter’s Lie gives you four of the best shotgun perks. Each one has its justification and promotes a playstyle or compensates for a weakness.
Perk Slot 1 offers:
- Sliding: Reloads the magazine from reserves when sliding, and you gain temporarily more range and stability – This compensates for the slow reload speed and lets you enjoy the stat boost.
- Quickdraw: The weapon can be drawn quickly – This boost allows you to swap the weapon faster and increases handling. Thus, you compensate for another weakness of slow shotguns.
Perk Slot 2 offers:
- First Shot: Improves range and precision on the first shot – This bonus gives you the strongest range increase on shotguns and is very rare.
- Vorpal Weapon: Increases your damage against enemy Supers and powerful opponents – This makes it possible to take down roaming Supers with a “shot + melee” combo. This cannot be found on any comparable shotgun.
This is how you should play: MeinMMO recommends to focus on “Quickdraw” plus “First Shot”. This way, you have the shotgun ready quickly in duels, aim faster, and fully exploit the important one-shot range. Ideally, aim not for the head, but for the body center.
If you utilize exotics that greatly improve your handling (like the Ophidian Aspect), you can also benefit from the sliding bonus.
If you want to play with Vorpal Weapon, it is advisable to focus on this perk only after a few minutes when the enemies have charged their Supers. At the beginning of the match, you gain no advantage from it. Thus, you can switch in the Trials when the indicator shows that your opponents have their Ulti ready.
You can use shotgun targeting perks on your armor to boost the aim assist slightly. This bends the luck even more in your favor and the shotgun pellets into your enemies.
Is Felwinter’s Lie usable in PvE? Theoretically, you can also use the weapon outside of PvP. But in PvE, it does not tear down trees. It is at best solid, but clearly designed for the Crucible and fighting against other Guardians.
If you want to fight in PvE, Vorpal Weapon against stronger enemies is useful, and the archetype can offer its advantages. Because without naming it, Felwinter’s Lie belongs to the aggressive shotguns and gains higher fire rate after kills. However, the lack of precision damage hampers you in PvE.
“People appreciate consistency”
This is what makes Felwinter’s better than the competition: The two challengers for the new shotgun are likely the Trials weapon Astral Horizon and the Mindbender. Experts who have made a name for themselves in the community, such as:
- Aztecross
- Drewskys
- Fallout
- CoolGuy
agree and say: Felwinter’s Lie is currently the best shotgun in PvP. It is not completely overpowered as it was in the early days of Destiny 1, but it is simply the ideal representation of a shotgun in the Crucible.
Reliability is the magic word here. The high range is the cherry on the delicious shotgun sundae, metaphorically speaking. Thanks to the intrinsically narrowed spread, you have pure reliability in your hands. The increased reliability even works in the air; other weapons require specific mods for that.
If you have a god roll of the other two weapons, you might not see such a strong improvement at first. But over time, Guardians will learn to love the feeling of consistency, as stated in the tests of PvP pros. Plus, you don’t need countless hours of grinding, which can quickly frustrate you if RNG Jesus has blessed you.
With Felwinter’s Lie, Guardians can unleash havoc in PvP for a year. If you don’t have a god-roll shotgun yet, make sure to grab one. Even if you already have your chosen trusty shotgun, it’s definitely worth taking a look at the top dog.
