PS4 players will probably not be on board this evening when Witch launches. As if this disadvantage weren’t already mean enough, a bug has now caused them to be able to press the download button only at launch, while others might already be in the game.
Yesterday, PS4 players cursed their console because they were expecting a mega download for the preload in Destiny 2 for the “Witch Queen” preload. Basically, they are forced to download the entire game again, while all other players are “only” getting an update.
- On PC and PS5, only about 20 GB need to be downloaded.
- Only PS4 players have to deal with a download of the complete game at 72 GB.
- Furthermore, due to a bug, they can only load the new content from 6 PM.
This made it clear that PS4 players will not be present at the launch of Witch Queen tonight, if all goes well. Because such a large amount of data takes, depending on the internet connection, quite a while to download completely.
And this, despite Bungie announcing in one of their recent blogs that it should soon get better specifically for PS4 players. The required content should actually be able to be downloaded in the background during downtime. However, this has now changed due to a bug.
On Twitter, Bungie shared the bad news with the players:
Why is the download on the PS4 so large? The PS4 infrastructure is to blame, and it’s also the reason why PS4 console players are probably cursing their old PlayStation now.
A new PS5 takes significantly less time to patch game files compared to a PS4. So those who primarily play on PS4 have a major disadvantage today, at the launch of Witch Queen.
Crossplay is no solution either: Destiny 2 offers crossplay as an option, but anyone planning to switch now should consider that this comes at a cost.
- Anyone wanting to switch platforms must have purchased the new expansion for that platform as well.
- The new Season Pass will be activated on the platform where you log in first.
What does the community say? On Reddit, PS4 players seem to have come to terms with their fate. Player Fit-Tackle-6107 has already written off his invitation to tea with Savathun:
My gut feeling is that we will arrive too late to the party. The speed at which games download/install (at least on my PS4) is painfully slow. If the update is not available until the servers go live, I won’t be able to play the game today.
The German Destiny 2 community is also “not amused”, as Destiny 2 player Patsipat put it. For him, there was more than enough time for Bungie or Sony to have avoided this problem in advance.
A damn problem with the preload? 3 months more time and a problem with the preload? Who is it on now? Sony or Bungie? Sometimes I wonder if anything gets tested in this industry at all. Then the planned LAN evening goes down the drain….
Are you affected by the PS4 error and upset that you might not be able to participate in the launch right away? Or is that not a problem because you were planning to start later anyway? Let us know in the comments whether you are already thinking about purchasing a PS5.
