As Bungie mentioned in a tweet, the second option is the case. The API that external sites use still needs to be adjusted.
Because the required EXP for a shiny engram has been raised to 160,000 – and thus doubled.
6% more experience – for everyone!
What does this mean in concrete terms? Bungie removes a questionable mechanic from the game that prevented fast farming of shiny engrams. In exchange, the necessary experience points for a shiny engram are doubled, which makes farming the engrams difficult again.
In the course of the tests, the Reddit user EnergiserX discovered that the mechanic removed by Bungie caused players to earn on average only 44% of the displayed experience over time.

The doubling of EXP for a shiny engram amounts to a halving of the earned XP – in total, players have thus gained 6% experience.
Robert says: Bungie fixes a problem only after loud protests from the community and bad press – and at the same time doubles the experience points needed for a shiny engram. Even this fact only became public after players stumbled upon further inconsistencies with external sites like the Destiny Item Manager.
Bungie’s policy of information and handling of this issue is, in my opinion, catastrophic. This was a missed opportunity to regain lost trust.

One would think that this issue could be laid to rest, if … yes, if the community on Reddit had not found further inconsistencies.
Required experience points for shiny engrams doubled
The Reddit user Aercus wanted to verify Bungie’s statement and conducted his own tests after the system was shut down – and the results were surprising. Although Aercus now received the same amount of EXP even after the fifth public event in a row, the system was completely shut down.

However, he also found that external sources only displayed exactly 50% of the experience points earned, which led to the following conclusions:
- Bungie has simply halved the experience points earned, which the game does not display, or
- external sites like Destinytracker are wrong and do not reflect reality

After the big ups and downs in recent weeks, Bungie has finally commented on the EXP issue and removed a corresponding mechanic in Destiny 2. Now, further inconsistencies are emerging – because the experience points required for a shiny engram have been doubled!
For some time now, some players have been speculating that something is wrong with the experience points in Destiny 2. And yet, precise tests were needed to prove that there is definitely something fishy. Because the experience points displayed in the game did not correspond to the truth.
Those who played many public events in a row received fewer and fewer experience points. The losses amounted to up to 90%, while the game itself continued to throw around big numbers. The Guardians accused Bungie of doing this deliberately to boost sales of shiny engrams in the Eververse, the real money shop.
Bungie only reacts after protests – and deactivates the system
Only the uproar from the community along with critical press reports made Bungie react. Thus, the mechanic was recently completely removed.
The experience points displayed in the game are now supposed to correspond to the truth.

Interestingly, Bungie avoided using the term “bug” in the public statement on the issue – they merely stated that they were not happy with the internal test results. What this strange system is all about, Bungie remains silent on.
One would think that this issue could be laid to rest, if … yes, if the community on Reddit had not found further inconsistencies.
