The developers of Destiny 2 have announced that they will finally take a closer look at Three-Peeking, a frustrating problem of the third-person view. In doing so, they hinted at possible new weapons for the third-person perspective.
This is the issue: Recently, community manager Cozmo addressed a long-standing topic from the PvP community. It concerns the so-called Three-Peeking or Third Person Peeking. This is a phenomenon that can be increasingly observed in the Crucible – especially in competitive modes such as the Trials.
Players use the third-person perspective of Destiny 2 to their advantage to look around corners or get a better overview without exposing themselves. To do this, they may use the sword, which is played in third-person view in Destiny 2, or perform an emote that is also displayed in 3rd-person.
Many players find this unfair, and the topic has been discussed in the community for a long time.
What has Bungie said about Three-Peeking? Nothing concrete. The Bungie team is aware of the feedback surrounding 3-Peeking and is currently discussing possible options. However, they are making no promises, as they are still evaluating which changes are feasible. After all, it’s a complicated matter that affects gestures, swords, and any potential third-person weapons in the future.
In short: Bungie is currently looking into the whole issue, but there is still nothing concrete to communicate to the Guardians. However, there is certainly something exciting about the tweet.
Future Third-Person Weapons for Destiny 2?
This statement is also interesting: It concerns the “potential future third-person weapons” that Bungie mentioned in their post.
Currently, only swords can be regularly played in third-person – occasionally, Guardians can obtain scorch weapons (Scorch Cannon), which do not belong to their arsenal permanently. However, the statement sounds as if Bungie is indeed considering introducing more weapons that can be played in third-person.
Potential new melee weapons such as axes, spears, or sickles would not be out of the question. Destiny 2 already has a lot of weapon types, and pretty much everything common has already been covered. However, the game is planned to run for quite a while, with the currently known plans extending until autumn 2022 and even beyond with seasons. Fresh toys for melee combat a la Warframe would fit perfectly to complement the currently lonely swords.
With something completely new, they must surprise the Guardians in the coming years. In some activities, there has already been a taste of how axes could be played – as seen in the Archon Forge from Destiny 1.
Keep in mind, these are merely speculations; perhaps nothing will come of it. However, given Bungie’s statement and the current diversity of weapon types in Destiny 2, it is not completely far-fetched.
What do you think? Will Destiny 2 bring more melee weapons in the style of third-person swords in the future? Or is too much being read into a casual statement? By the way, the following weapon changes are already confirmed – and that will happen next week: Destiny 2 is doing significant adjustments to the sandbox for Season 13 – Key buffs and nerfs
