The first player data in PvP of Destiny 2 shows: The MIDA Multi-Tool is popular, but not overpowered! Will there still be a nerf?
Bungie provides a brief look behind the scenes of Destiny 2. Senior Designer Jon Weisnewski talks about the current sandbox. This is a topic that is always discussed in the Destiny forums. Which weapons are too strong? Which are too weak? What about the abilities? Where does Bungie need to improve?
According to Weisnewski, Bungie is watching these lively discussions, reading the feedback, watching streams and YouTube videos, and gathering plenty of player data on the side. Recently, they received the first data from the analytics team. This means: The first balance patch can be tackled.
However, they are not yet ready to go into detail about how weapons and abilities will be tuned in the future, according to the senior designer. He can, however, say three things:
- Bungie has heard your feedback.
- Destiny 2 will receive updates that adjust the sandbox experience.
- Bungie is aware of the popularity of the MIDA Multi-Tool and is closely monitoring it. The weapon is very popular, but according to the data, there are alternatives that are just as effective, or even more effective – in all activities. However, Weisnewski does not reveal what those alternatives are.
The hype around MIDA is huge
Last week, we reported on the MIDA hype, which has impressive numbers:
- In 98% of all Trials matches, at least one player used the MIDA Multi-Tool.
- 35.9% of all kills in Trials were achieved with the MIDA Multi-Tool.
- 15.3% of all kills in total PvP were achieved with the MIDA Multi-Tool.
This dominance has decreased a bit in recent days. Instead of 15.3% of all kills in total PvP, it is now “only” 13.0%. The outstanding weapon remains the MIDA Multi-Tool nonetheless. Automatic rifles like the Origin Story and especially Uriels Gift (10.7%) are getting closer.
Because a look at the “Time-to-Kill” values of all weapons shows, that automatic rifles are actually the top weapons in PvP. Likely, there will be alignments between automatic rifles and other weapon types in the future.
For the MIDA, a nerf is actually not necessary, which Bungie also suggests. Why it is still so popular can be quickly explained:
- The MIDA Multi-Tool is an exotic scout rifle that is obtained through an exotic quest. Every Guardian easily gets this weapon.
- When aiming with the MIDA, the radar remains active. You are always aware if an enemy is approaching.
- The MIDA Multi-Tool increases movement speed, allowing you to move quickly across the maps.
- Since sniper ammunition is rare in Destiny 2, scout rifles shine at greater distances.
- If you have the MIDA Mini-Tool, a legendary submachine gun, equipped, there is an additional synergy effect: The speed bonus is further increased.
