In Destiny 2 the Defender subclass is replaced by the Sentinel. The Titan can still create his Bubble.
Destiny 2 introduces three new subclasses: the Dawnblade for the Warlock, the Arcstrider for the Hunter, and the Sentinel for the Titan. These were revealed during the gameplay reveal in mid-May.
Information surfaced that these three subclasses will replace the existing subclasses of the respective elements; and to finally clarify all doubts about this topic, Game Director Luke Smith confirms in an extensive interview with PC Gamer: Yes, the old focuses are indeed disappearing:
- The Sunsinger Warlock becomes the Dawnblade,
- the Blade Dancer Hunter becomes the Arcstrider
- and the Defender Titan becomes the Sentinel.
All three will receive new abilities and a new Super (while abilities like grenades and jumps will mostly remain the same).
The Dawnblade focus and the Arcstrider focus have already been introduced in detail; only the Sentinel Titan lacks further details. Smith now discusses this new subclass and reveals that the “Dawning Shield” still exists.
Information about the Sentinel in Destiny 2
The Sentinel activates a Void Shield as a Super. With this shield, the Titan can do three things:
- Use it as protection – This allows you to have mobile cover while moving safely
- Use it as a melee weapon – Strike enemies with the shield
- Throw it – You can throw the shield like Captain America towards enemies, dealing damage from a distance
The idea behind the Sentinel is an aggressive support character that is, by nature, defensively oriented. Luke Smith reveals that he and large parts of the sandbox team were fans of the Defender Titan. Therefore, the Sentinel will also be able to activate a Bubble – the Super of the Defender.
If you select the corresponding skill tree in the focus overview, you can hold down the buttons for activating the Super to create a Bubble – which is actually called “Dawning Shield.” This has been and is often used in the raids of Destiny 1 to deal increased damage to bosses with weapons of light.
Whether the Dawning Shield will also have weapons of light and blessings of light in Destiny 2 is still unknown.
According to Smith, the special feature of the Bubble is that it can change the battlefield for a period of time. A well-placed Bubble can decide between victory and defeat. And that is a great attribute for a Super. He wants to see things like that more frequently in Destiny 2, which is why Titans receive a barricade ability and Warlocks receive a buff ability, allowing for synergy effects.
In summary: If you skill the Sentinel accordingly, he can set a Bubble in Destiny 2.
