In Destiny 2, a submachine gun remains one of the strongest weapons. Many thought Bungie would finally end its dominance with the announced nerfs. However, the reality looks different. For it still proves to be a deadly threat, taking down opponents in an impressive 0.67 seconds.
Multiple nerfs could not stop this weapon: In a blog post, Bungie announced adjustments to some weapons that are too strong or too weak. This included not only the “Graviton Lance” but also the submachine gun “The Immortal” and the perk “Target Acquisition”.
Bungie noted that the 750 RPM submachine gun “The Immortal” was used too frequently in its mastery version compared to other weapons, resulting in it performing better than its competitors. Therefore, several nerfs were initiated in Season 21.
- On one hand, the damage of aggressive submachine guns was generally reduced.
- The base damage per hit for “The Immortal” was reduced from 15 to 14 for body shots and from 22 to 21 for critical hits (headshots).
- The absurd range of the submachine gun was also reduced by 10.
- And since the perk “Target Acquisition” was an overwhelmingly obvious choice for “The Immortal,” it was also nerfed.
- Bungie reduced the maximum damage against players from 40% to 25%.
Nevertheless, “The Immortal” remains unbeaten, much to the dismay of some players. For despite its seemingly low range, the weapon remains strong in PvP. Players can still annihilate their opponents in no time.
I see no difference
: This result has confused and angry the Guardians, as many expected the adjustments to significantly weaken the weapon.
On Twitter, Guardian Panduh has now released a test after the nerfs showing that almost nothing about The Immortal
has noticeably changed.
The weapon is apparently still capable of destroying its opponents in breathtaking 0.67 seconds – just like before the nerfs.
This video shows the direct comparison before and after the adjustments:
- Before the nerf, “The Immortal” required 9 bullets (headshots with target acquisition) to kill a Guardian with 100 resilience.
- After the nerf, “The Immortal” still requires 9 bullets for this.
- Without target acquisition, currently, it takes 9 critical and 1 body shot.
Nothing has changed in TTK: The effective time to take down an opponent has thus remained the same. And it should, as some players already realized with Bungie’s announcements.
The hope that the changes would lead to an extension of TTK (Time-to-Kill) and thereby provide players with better chances of survival in the future has not been fulfilled and was misleading for some.
This is also the view of player Morokei, who comments under the post: “I don’t think I have ever seen a stronger placebo nerf,” while player Currently Vibing quips: “Now we have to wait another three months until the weapon dies.”
And PvP player Benj believes Bungie should have been bolder with the nerf:
Sometimes it is necessary to nerf something into the ground because that ultimately is the best option for the health of the game. Cautious nerfing can be a great approach, but when there are extreme outliers (like “The Immortal”), one must be more ruthless.

Others argued that Bungie may actually be keeping this strong lure in the Trials on purpose. “It is no coincidence that the last Trials of Osiris had such miserable player numbers in the Season of the Seraph and then ‘The Immortal’ was released,” says Guardian niten08.
Bungie will nerf the weapon again? Yes, for Bungie, the balance of all weapons is always important. Once the use of a weapon increases and a larger portion of the player population predominantly uses a specific weapon, Bungie aims for normalization. Therefore, protruding nails will sooner or later be “hammered down” until nothing protrudes.
And looking at the statistics, it is clear: The 750 RPM submachine gun “The Immortal” continues to dominate the top weapons of the Trials.
- In the last Trials weekend, the weapon once again achieved first place with a kill rate of 7.1%, corresponding to 1,479,336 Guardian kills.
- And also in the last Trials weekends, it was always found in the top 2.
“The Immortal” will therefore be adjusted again in Season 22 and the zoom with the scope will be weakened. The changes will also affect Shayura’s Wrath, which data-wise is actually the most effective submachine gun, although its availability is much lower.
Although these are no longer the record numbers of yesteryear, it is quite possible that Bungie will make further adjustments in the near future to finally limit the power of the Immortals in PvP.
Until then, Guardians should be cautious when hunting “The Immortal” or facing her in PvP. Despite its nerf, it remains a powerful and dangerous weapon.
What experiences have you had with “The Immortal” after the nerf? How has the SMG changed in its gameplay and dominance for you? And do you believe that Bungie needs to further revise the weapon to ensure a more balanced gameplay experience? Then feel free to comment your opinion.
Besides this unchanged fact, a leak is currently the hottest rumor in the Destiny community:
Destiny 2: A leak apparently shows the new ability for the DLC “The Final Form”
