Surprise in Destiny 2: The Shadowkeep expansion is postponed. The release will now take place in October.
The new release date for Shadowkeep: Bungie has just announced quite unexpectedly that the upcoming autumn expansion will be released later than previously communicated.
- The new release date: October 1, 2019
- The old, no longer valid release date was September 17
Shadowkeep will be postponed by 2 weeks.
Shadowkeep would benefit from more time
Reasons for the release change: Bungie states the reason is that the expansion would benefit from a little more extra time in development, which is why they will take it.
Now that they are independent of Activision, the future lies solely in Bungie’s hands. This means they are flexible to do what is best for the game and ultimately for the players, even if it is a tough decision.
Both Shadowkeep and New Light are therefore postponed to October 1.

Bungie emphasizes that it was not an easy decision. They know that some Guardians would take special leave for the Destiny release. They apologize for disrupting these plans. They shared this information as soon as they could.
Additional info Bungie adds to the announcement:
- The new Shadowkeep raid is called Garden of Salvation and begins on October 5. Now it is known what the raid is called. They will host another World-First race.
- The Triumph Moments will be extended to September 17 (3 weeks longer)
- Another Iron Banner starts on September 17
- Cross Save is coming later this summer, but still in August.
- You can find the new roadmap from Season 7 to Shadowkeep here.
Bungie’s DeeJ has since commented on Twitter. He adds that all autumn releases will be postponed to October 1, including Shadowkeep, New Light, and the Steam release. Additionally, Luke Smith and other developers will explain in detail in the coming weeks why this postponement occurred.
What do you think of this news? Is it the right decision, or is it just annoying that you now have to rearrange your vacation plans?
