Soon Destiny 2 will receive the Forsaken expansion which includes a revised mod system. However, particularly regarding the compatibility of Year 1 weapons and Year 2 weapon mods, there are still some question marks in the community.

Just before the launch of the Forsaken expansion for Destiny 2, there were still open questions about the use of upcoming Year 2 weapon mods with Year 1 weapons. Now Bungie has clarified this.
Year 2 Mods and Year 1 Weapons – What You Need to Know
Conflicting Statements: Just a few days ago, Bungie released extensive information about the revised mods that will be introduced with the Forsaken expansion.
During this announcement, it became clear that Year 2 armor mods can be used on both Year 1 armor pieces and Year 2 armor sets, but the community remained uncertain about the weapon mods. This is because the developers contradicted themselves in some of their statements.
Bungie Provides Clarity: The Gameplay Design Lead Josh Hamrick spoke up on Twitter to clarify:
- Year 1 weapons in Destiny 2 will not be able to use the new Year 2 weapon mods.
- All existing armor pieces, however, will be able to equip Year 2 mods.
Fans Upset: This statement has disappointed and upset some fans. They had hoped to still effectively utilize parts of their Year 1 arsenal in the second year by bringing the weapons to a higher power level. However, in addition to the missing random rolls, the incompatibility with the new weapon mods adds another disadvantage that makes these weapons almost redundant.
Popular Year 1 Weapons Will Be Adjusted: Guardians will not have to completely give up the firearms from the first year. Because some popular Year 1 weapons will return in new form – with random rolls and the ability to carry Year 2 weapon mods.
