In Destiny 2, Bungie lists some sandbox changes that are upcoming. Guardians will become more powerful and faster.
In the recently released Spring 2018 roadmap, sandbox changes were mentioned. The weapons and abilities are set to be reworked – likely on March 27 with update 1.1.4.
Bungie’s design lead Josh Hamrick provided more detail on what the sandbox team is working on.
Guardians should experience more “hero moments”
Hamrick first shares that the team is currently working on many updates for Destiny 2. In the coming months, he or one of his team members will appear more frequently to discuss the details of the planned changes. Here is the first round of sandbox changes that are planned.
The upcoming sandbox update aims for these goals:
- Individual players should experience more “hero moments”
- This will include increasing overall speed and mobility
- Additionally, your super moves will recharge faster
- Also, the frequency and effectiveness of power weapons will be increased, especially in the Crucible.

Here are the specific changes:
- All three glide options as well as catapult and directional glide will be tuned and buffed to make them more unique and faster.
- The mobility stat will be expanded and completely retuned. In short: Everyone will be faster, and the max will be maximized.
- The maximum base speed of players will be increased, raising the overall movement speed – no matter how you achieve this.
- Arcstrider, Sentinel, and Striker will all move at the same, faster pace when their respective super moves are active.
- Arcstrider generally performs well in PvP, mainly due to its neutral game perks. Bungie is making the following changes to make the super more competitive:
- Faster attack animations
- Faster dodge animations
- Increased range of all attacks
- The super recharges faster for everyone!
- Bungie buffs several weapon archetypes (including but not limited to hand cannons, pulse rifles, sniper rifles, and shotguns) as well as some specific perks.
- A main goal is to make shotguns, sniper rifles, and fusion rifles more relevant in the game.
- PvP combat pace and the frequency of power plays will be increased:
- The respawn time for players in all quick play modes will be reduced. You’ll be able to respawn faster.
- Power ammo respawn timers for all quick play modes will be reduced by about 30%.
- Power ammo respawn timers in “Survival” will be reduced by about 40%.
- Power ammo respawn timers in “Countdown” will be reduced by about 25%.
- The amount of ammo will be adjusted relative to these timers and the weapon type.
- Enemy players drop their power ammo when eliminated.
Additionally, the changes to the shoulder charge from a few months ago are being reverted. It is admitted that this was an error.
The flinch of sniper rifles when you are hit is also too high. While this was intended to be fixed, there was a bug that prevents a quick adjustment. It will take some time to get this problem under control.
Note: According to Hamrick, these changes are not 100% guaranteed yet, but currently, it looks good that they will come. After these adjustments, the focus will shift to exotics and the mod system. For example, mods will be able to influence ability cooldowns.
What do you think of these planned sandbox changes? Do they make sense?
