Halloween is just around the corner, and that means for Destiny 2 players: the “Festival of the Lost” is back. Even though the activities won’t change again this year, the event will still feature some new elements. MeinMMO tells you what they are and where the catch is.
This is what players can expect for the Halloween event in 2023: The annual celebration of the spooky festival “Halloween” in Destiny 2 has become a staple of the game over the years.
- Traditionally, players wear spooky (and silly!) masks during the “Festival of the Lost.” For example, a mask of Mara Sov or the raid boss Rhulk.
- They then collect treats by completing event challenges from Space-Omi Eva Levante in the so-called “Haunted Sectors” throughout the system.
The bad news is: This event activity won’t change in 2023 either. The haunted sectors will remain; only their locations will change.
The good news is that Bungie will provide you with a harder difficulty level for the “Haunted Sectors” in 2023, giving you more loot in the form of “Cursed Engrams” and likely demanding more from you.
But the best news is that in 2023 there will finally be a completely black shader. And it’s even in leather design. Something players have been waiting for years. Unfortunately, Bungie has also added a super black catch to it.
In the video, you can see what the Halloween event in Destiny 2 2023 has to offer:
A memento that is only available for three weeks
This is the problem with the black leather shader: A black leather shader for your character is the dream of many guardians. Some would play it right away to manifest the darkness in their armor and swing into action on their sparrow with a cool leather finish look.
However, the plan has several catches:
- The black leather shader is unfortunately only a time-limited memento and can therefore only be used on weapons, not on armor.
- Additionally, it is a random drop in the form of a cursed engram, meaning it can’t be farmed specifically.
- You can only receive the Black Leather memento for your weapons during the Festival of the Lost. After the event, it will no longer be available, which means that guardians who aren’t actively playing at that time or miss the Halloween event probably won’t ever get the memento.
The community is divided on this: Many see it as FOMO, the fear of missing out, when such a sought-after cosmetic element is only available for a short time. Even if it will only be usable for weapons.
Player Zero_Emerald, however, has a slight hope that he might be able to stack the mementos earned during the Festival of the Lost and comments via Reddit: “I hope we can keep more than one at a time. It would be a shame if a weapon comes out in a later season that fits well, but I have none left until next year.“
Currently, however, only 1 memento can be in the inventory at a time and is not stackable. You have to consume them to obtain another.
Player SnorlaxBlocksTheWay also assumes that Bungie knew exactly what effect this would have on players.
Addition of a completely black leather shader memento is key to getting people to participate in the event playlists and stick around so that players can craft all their most desired weapons with the memento and then foam at the mouth, eagerly awaiting the return of the “Festival of the Lost” next year.

Here’s what else is happening in the Halloween event 2023
Of course, there will be a new special Halloween weapon in 2023. It will join the other old Halloween weapons in the event’s loot pool.
- This year it is a heavy cosmic void grenade launcher named “Acosmic” with rapid-fire casing.

As always, players can also earn a special armor set in 2023. Bungie had its players vote on this back in January 2023. It was about bugs or spiders.
The bug look won. So you will get some extra appendages, multiple eyes, and wings.
This year’s Halloween event will also introduce a new type of engram: the “Cursed Engrams.”
These have two uses:
- Players can open them individually to receive some treats from the event as usual.
- Or you can use them as currency for the new “Hocus Focusing.” This allows you to acquire exotic armors with four focus categories for 2500 candies, in addition to the focus on “Legendary Weapons.” Including armors that you may have never earned before.
The only requirement is that players must own the corresponding expansion to obtain the exotic armor during the “Hocus Focusing.” A full list of which expansions are tied to which exo armors can be found on the Bungie website.
When does the Halloween event start? On October 17, after the weekly reset at 7:00 PM, you can start hunting for the new Halloween items.
What do you think about the decision to time-limit the completely black leather shader memento? Do you think this motivates players to participate in activities, or do you consider that frustrating? Feel free to leave us your answer in the comments.
