In Destiny, there are hints about the upcoming sequel “Destiny 2”. This is expected to bring significant and groundbreaking changes.
Currently, there are statements circulating on the internet from Bungie, which can be read in the latest editions of Edge magazine and the “PlayStation Official Magazine”. These relate to the next big thing in 2017.
According to Edge, it was originally planned for “Destiny 2” to be released in fall 2016. However, for unspecified reasons, the sequel had to be postponed to 2017, making way for “The Rise of Iron”. Rumors have been circulating for months that Destiny 2 has been rebooted. In the meantime, however, the majority of the Bungie team is diligently working on the sequel for 2017.
Concrete information about the contents of Destiny 2 is still scarce. A few weeks ago, discarded concept arts for new focuses appeared (see also the title image), but they probably have little significance about the actual sequel.
Now, the official PlayStation magazine has the following lines about Destiny 2:
“Bigger changes are coming: 2017 will bring Destiny 2.”
and:
“The bigger the release, the more shocking the changes will be that one can make.”
Specifically, mention is made of “disruptive changes”, referring to changes with destructive, shocking, and jarring effects. What could this mean?
Destiny 2 – Are we all starting over from scratch?
Here, Bungie’s official statements also end. But now the Guardians are passionately discussing and painting wild fantasies about what the “disruptive changes” could mean.
So far, with “Rise of Iron,” it has always been said: We are building on the existing foundation. We deliver new content, but the core mechanics remain as we know them from TTK. “Disruptive changes” now sound as if they want to demolish Destiny down to its very foundations.
At this point, three possible scenarios can be envisioned:
- Bungie draws a clear line. You must leave all your items behind, possibly even start new characters (though it has always been said that you can always carry your Guardians into future expansions and sequels) or character rollbacks occur. Perhaps the game takes place on completely new planets and/or in a different time. The mechanics would also be revised – making Destiny 2 a completely new MMO shooter.
- Bungie is merely drumming up interest and wants to generate curiosity and excitement. Destiny 2 will be a big expansion, but it won’t bring any drastic changes. You keep your Guardians. The previous items remain in the game. New content and features will come. Destiny 2 may be similar in scope and innovations to TTK. This is also possible.

- Destiny 2 will be a mix of both previous scenarios. The current Destiny will not be completely left behind but will change significantly. For example, some planets could be destroyed, while new ones are introduced. The existing characters will be retained. There will be many fresh items and some of the current weapons and armor pieces might carry over into the future.
Especially for the last scenario, the following setting would be interesting: A hefty sequel that revolves around the Cabal. The enemy faction of the Cabal has so far been treated somewhat dismissively by Bungie. Fans have been scratching their heads for quite some time, wondering when they will finally learn more about this military power in the universe that effortlessly hops from planet to planet.
In a recent interview with Gameinformer a few weeks ago, Bungie mentioned that we do not yet know the true power of the Cabal. Perhaps with Destiny 2, it will be time to get an impression of this power. Maybe these destructive changes are to be taken literally, meaning that the Cabal could take the stage, destroy previously known planets and the events then shift to other planets or moons.
But at this point, a clear note: This is pure speculation. What Bungie really has in store for us in Destiny 2 remains a mystery.
By the way: In the community, opinions on how Destiny 2 should be are divided. Some say: Yes, I want a complete fresh start. The previous experiences were good, but now I am ready for something new. Others, however, say: I absolutely do not want to lose my current items. I do not want to have hunted for items for months just to have them taken away from me now.
