As many Guardians have already suspected, the exotic pulse rifle Bad Juju has indeed returned. In this Destiny 2 guide, we will show you how to unlock the Tribute Hall and master the quest for this weapon exotic. We will also explain how to obtain the Masterwork Catalyst for Bad Juju.
What is the new weapon exotic about? Since the weekly reset on July 9, Guardians can earn a new weapon exotic in Destiny 2. It is a beloved returner from Destiny 1 – the exotic pulse rifle Bad Juju. The exotic Masterwork Catalyst for Bad Juju is also already in the game and can be obtained.
What can Bad Juju do in Destiny 2? This pulse rifle has a fire rate of 450 and fires automatically. Thanks to the intrinsic perk Curse of Famine, kills reload the magazine of Bad Juju, briefly increase weapon damage, and grant Super energy – depending on the strength of Curse of Famine (up to 5x stackable).
Leveling the catalyst extends the duration of Curse of Famine for the Masterwork version of Bad Juju, making it easier to achieve a 5-stack of the perk.
How to get Bad Juju in Destiny 2 – Here’s what you need to do
Bad Juju is tied to a relatively simple quest, which can either turn out to be very lengthy or doable in no time. It all depends on how many triumphs you have already unlocked for the Tribute Hall and how much Glimmer, enhancement cores, Legendary Shards, and planetary materials you have.
Get the Invitation from the Emperor on Nessus and unlock the Tribute Hall
Here’s how to get the quest: First, you need to obtain the quest for the new weapon exotic. Fly to the Guardian’s Grave area on Nessus and go to the Calus Barge – a transport ship from Emperor Calus that landed there at the start of Season 7.
On the barge, search for the NPC robot Werner 99-40. Right next to him is a chest that you can open for 5,000 Glimmer. You will then receive the exotic quest for Bad Juju.
Here’s how to unlock the Tribute Hall: Upon receiving the quest, access to the Tribute Hall will also be unlocked. You can find it on the planet map of Nessus below next to the Leviathan – right by the raids and the Menagerie.
How the Countenance of Calus and the Tribute Hall work
What is the Tribute Hall all about? Now head into the Tribute Hall and speak with the Countenance of Calus, the golden statue of the Cabal Emperor in the middle of the foyer.
The Tribute Hall itself is your own area aboard the Leviathan, built in honor of you by Emperor Calus. There you can showcase certain trophies and obtain Bad Juju.
How the Tribute Hall works: After speaking with the Countenance of Calus, the quest will continue for you, and the trading functions of the statue will be unlocked.
You can now collect four bounties daily with each character and exchange them for currency and materials to purchase tributes.
For each completed bounty, you will receive, among other items, the Blessing of Opulence. If you turn in this item at the statue, you will receive a 1% discount on the tributes offered there. Up to 80% discount is possible in total. If the prices for the tributes seem too high at first, you can complete bounties diligently to significantly lower the costs.
You can also obtain tributes not only by purchasing but also by unlocking specific Tribute Hall triumphs. You can find these in the menu under Triumphs/Locations/Sub-locations/The Tribute Hall.
These tributes can then be offered in the actual Tribute Hall, which only unfolds in all its glory after the foyer – meaning you place them in the designated spot. If you can submit one or more tributes in the hall, the corresponding spots will be indicated by a small light pillar.
With the increasing number of tributes you offer, there are various rewards. For example, you need 18 tributes for Bad Juju and a total of 45 for the corresponding Masterwork Catalyst. In total, you can submit 50 tributes. Whether there is more than just the exotic gesture “There, where the X is” for that in the end is currently unknown.
By the way: Which tributes you submit specifically for Bad Juju does not matter. Just turn in everything you have available to quickly complete the 18 tributes.
Here’s how the quest continues: From now on, it’s basically all about collecting and offering tributes. 18 are needed for Bad Juju. In several quest steps, you will unlock more of these tributes, use them, and earn so-called memories.
These are also items (dog projections) that you should place in the Tribute Hall – specifically around the centrally located chest with Bad Juju.
There are a total of five. You will receive them automatically on your way to the 18 tributes and only need to activate them at the corresponding marked spots (light pillar).
Unlocking and buying tributes – Here’s how to progress in the Bad Juju quest
Here’s how to obtain tributes: More than 20 tributes can be bought from the statue. Those who have laid up proper reserves of materials can benefit immensely and greatly shorten the quest duration.
More tributes can be obtained through the triumphs of the Tribute Hall. If you have already earned some, that can save a lot of time as well.
To earn these triumphs, you need to complete specific tasks while using armor and weapons in Calus style – for example, from the Menagerie, the Leviathan raid, from one of its raid wings, or from the new raid Crown of Sorrows. The more matching gear pieces you wear, the faster you will make progress.
These triumphs grant you tributes:
- Imperial Foot Soldier: Defeat enemies in Strikes
- Imperial Rogue: Defeat enemies in Gambit
- Imperial Assassin: Defeat enemy Guardians in Gambit
- Rogue in Uniform: Earn Infamy in Gambit
- In the Coliseum: Defeat enemy Guardians in the Crucible
- Emperor’s Gladiator: Earn Valor in the Crucible
- High Roller: Complete a Nightfall with at least 100,000 points
- Wasteful Defender: Complete several Nightfall Strikes above the point threshold (probably over 50,000 points. To be sure, play over 100,000 points)
- Triumphant Champion: Earn 40,000 Triumph points
- Final Exam: Complete encounters in the Leviathan raid
- A Wish That Holds Weight: Complete encounters in the Last Wish raid
- Fist of the Empire: Complete encounters in the Scourge of the Past raid
- Crown of Sorrows: Complete encounters in the Crown of Sorrows raid
By the way, there are still two secret triumphs, one of which is apparently awarded for a flawless run in the mission “The Other Side.” Whether you also receive tributes from these two triumphs is currently unclear.
Mission “The Other Side”
Here’s how to unlock the mission: Once you have gathered 18 triumphs, you must return to the statue. There, you can retrieve the quest step “The Other Side.” You have to travel to the Ascendant Realm and capture an essence for Calus there. To do this, head to the Bad Juju chest in the middle of the Tribute Hall and interact with it. A portal will then open above the chest, and you can travel to the said Ascendant Realm.
What you should know about the mission: The mission has a recommended power level of 350 and is reportedly doable well alone. However, if you encounter difficulties, it can definitely be completed easily in a fireteam with friends. Just complete the mission, as it is self-explanatory.
Get Bad Juju and the Masterwork Catalyst
Here’s how to get Bad Juju: Once you finish the mission “The Other Side,” you will return through a portal to the Tribute Hall and can collect the weapon from the now open chest in the middle of the room by interacting with the weapon.
Here’s how to get the Catalyst: Subsequently, the Catalyst will be unlocked for purchase at the Countenance of Calus. You will need to offer a proud 45 tributes for this. To fully level it up, you simply need to defeat a certain number of enemies with Bad Juju.
