In Destiny 2, the artifacts will return with the Shadowkeep expansion – but differently than they were known from the predecessor. Bungie has now revealed more details about this feature.
These were the artifacts in Destiny 1: Artifacts were part of the Guardian’s gear in Destiny 1 with their own slot and granted players additional perks. The “Iron Lord” artifacts from Rise of Iron provided some powerful effects that had a significant impact on the gameplay and were popular among many Guardians.
What we know so far about the artifacts in Destiny 2: For Destiny 2, the artifacts were initially not carried over and will only appear soon in a revised, more complex form with the Shadowkeep expansion.
This is an item where players can unlock various perks or bonuses and thus further customize their Guardian to their individual playstyle.
The perks are divided into several tiers. At each tier, multiple perks can be activated, which need to be found first. With increasing levels, the perks become more powerful and should even come close to the feeling of an Exotic at the last tier.

These new details have been revealed by Bungie about the artifacts in Destiny 2
Where do the new infos come from? The new details come from another exclusive interview by Bungie with the US site Polygon. Once again, Destiny Franchise Director Luke Smith and Destiny General Manager Mark Noseworthy discussed the Shadowkeep expansion.
This time, the artifacts were the focus of the conversation – specifically, how they have changed and what this means for Destiny 2.
What Bungie revealed in the interview about the artifacts:
- Artifacts are part of the new philosophy of Destiny 2. They are meant to give players the feeling that with each new season, movement comes into the game.
- Artifacts in Destiny 2 will be available seasonally and are thematically and progression-wise adapted to each season – like the “Eye of the Tormentor” artifact from the Shadowkeep ViDoc with its connection to the Vex, which we will fight in the Black Garden this fall. Thus, with each new season, you will set aside your old artifact and earn a new one.
- Artifacts are intended to increase the RPG element in the game in conjunction with Armor 2.0. This modding of characters and their abilities promotes build crafting.
- Players can input seasonal mods into an artifact each season, some of which will have an enormous impact on the power and abilities of the Guardians. At the end of the season, the artifact will then be completely replaced – with new mods and abilities accordingly. Popular mods, however, have the chance to return in another season.
- In this way, Bungie wants to test new abilities each season, among other things. Players should also be encouraged by this system to try out new builds every season and develop their characters in all sorts of directions.
- How exactly you level up or develop the artifacts and how they influence the already available abilities of the Guardians is something the studio does not want to reveal at this point in time.
What do you think of this feature – especially in connection with Armor 2.0? Is Destiny 2 finally heading in the direction you have always wished for with the increased RPG elements? Or is it already too much for you?
