In two or three months, there will be a real highlight in Destiny 2 again. With Act 3, a “massive Exotic Mission” will come into play: one of the largest missions Bungie has ever created.
This is the announcement: In an interview with Edge magazine, Assistant Game Director Robbie Stevens revealed (via gamesradar):
- In Echoes Act 3: Finale, there will be an Exotic Mission – Act 3 starts on August 27, 2024
- It is “one of the largest exotic missions we have ever built”
- This is only possible due to the new content cadence; without it, something like this would have never been possible. With this, Stevens emphasizes the advantages of the new “Act” model over the Season model.
When will this happen? Act 3 starts on August 27, 2024, and ends on October 8, 2024. Depending on whether the mission appears early or later in Act 3 Echoes, we can expect the mission in two or three months.
Highlights in Destiny 2, but only if they come as a surprise
What is an exotic mission? Exotic missions are special quests, at the end of which an exotic weapon awaits the players.
In the past, exotic missions were often the highlights of a year outside the expansions. This was because they arrived spontaneously and were discovered by players who did not expect the mission. This could be seen in July 2018 around “Black Spindle”. It spread like wildfire:
- A player discovered a curious clue, followed it, and realized they were onto something big.
- The information spread in forums, and suddenly everyone was interested in this mission, investigating it and trying things out.
- The mysterious and sudden nature of these Exotic Missions put Destiny 2 into a constant state of excitement for a few days, as players desperately wanted to know how the mission would end and what kind of reward awaited them at the end.
This element of surprise seems to be something Bungie is now risking by announcing the exotic mission beforehand, but it seems that Bungie currently finds it more important to emphasize how good the new “episodic” model is compared to the previous season model.
The acts of an episode only last about 6 weeks, while seasons lasted several months. As Bungie assures, with the new model, it is now possible to “change the world a bit faster,” and that’s what everyone wanted.
