We are in the year 2017 – the year a full Destiny sequel will be released. So far, little is known about it; vague statements from Activision and wild rumors from anonymous sources have trickled in over the past months. Bungie itself remains tight-lipped.
When will Destiny 2 be released? – Release
Update: According to a leak, the release is on September 8.
There is no specific release date yet, but Activision’s CEO Eric Hirshberg confirmed in 2016 that the sequel will be released in 2017.
In the conference call in February 2017, Activision announced that Destiny 2 will be released in 2017 as a “full sequel”. However, no specific quarter is mentioned. Development is going great. Plans for game content afterwards are already in place.
Destiny 2 aims to appeal to the passionate Guardians still playing Destiny, but also create incentives to attract new fans and bring back old Guardians.
Looking at the Destiny releases of the past, September is the month for major releases. While the sequel may create a new “schedule”, we should currently keep September in mind as the release month.
It is unlikely that Destiny 2 will be released any earlier. Bungie and Activision will surely want to use the large stages of E3 and Gamescom to promote the large-scale sequel and to release spectacular trailers. Advertising campaigns will start months in advance, and Bungie will likely take its time releasing information in small doses. Therefore, it will not happen that Destiny 2 is released in spring 2017. That would be a huge surprise.
Until then, Guardians will have new tasks to complete with the content update “Age of Triumph”.
On which platforms will Destiny 2 be played? PS4, Xbox One, and PC?
With “The Rise of Iron Lords,” the last-gen consoles PS3 and Xbox 360 were left behind. At that time, Bungie stated that all future content would only be released on current-gen consoles, namely PS4 and Xbox One. Therefore, it is certain that Destiny 2 will also neglect the old consoles.
Moreover, rumors and hints are intensifying that Destiny 2 will also be released on PC. Console exclusivity is expected to be lifted. A source confirming PC support mentioned in late September that the Vicarious Visions studio would assist Bungie’s team for Destiny 2. This rumor has since been confirmed. It is quite possible that the PC rumor is also true.
What exactly is Destiny 2?

A question arises: Will Destiny 2 be a large expansion or a standalone game? Everything indicates that Destiny 2 will be its own, complete game. So, it won’t just add a few new story missions, strikes, and maybe even a raid, but the entire player experience will be new.
Statements have been made that Destiny 2 should feel like a standalone sequel, even if that means leaving behind planets, characters, and activities. The expansion “The Taken King” was a reboot of Destiny meant to fix the small things. Destiny 2, on the other hand, will overhaul the big things.
Character transfer in Destiny 2
For Destiny 2, you will have to leave all your items from Destiny 1 behind. There will be a hard reset. This way, the developers want to create the best possible game without being burdened by the past. However, the appearance of your Guardians will be retained.
Shortly before “The Taken King,” Bungie had sworn that players would never have to part with their Guardians. Not even in the sequels.
What content does Destiny 2 deliver?
According to statements from Activision, Destiny 2 will do quite a few things differently than Destiny. There will be a steady stream of fresh content to keep motivation high – content droughts like in 2016 should be a thing of the past. Furthermore, Destiny 2 brings “groundbreaking changes”.
Activision mentioned that Destiny 2 will feature memorable and relatable characters, that there will be a cinematic storyline, and that it will be suitable for both casual players and core gamers.
Specific content is still unknown, but there have already been talks of “play-in destinations.” This means that the planets should feel more alive, that they are populated, and that players can rush from one outpost to another. The quest system is supposed to become more interesting. Even cities are conceivable.
The US site Kotaku reported in late 2015 from anonymous sources that Destiny 2 will partly take place on Mars. A raid is planned there – perhaps the Cabal will play a larger role than before. The “Highmoon Studio” is reportedly working on this. The “European Dead Zone” on Earth is also mentioned as a possible content location. The fact that the Cabal are on the way is also hinted at by a “Mega Bloks” leak.
Who is working on Destiny 2?
As early as summer 2016, it leaked that the majority of Bungie would be working on Destiny 2. Currently, over 750 people work at Bungie. In addition, they have been supported for some time by Highmoon Studios. Since the end of 2016, it has been known that Vicarious Visions is now working on Destiny’s future along with two other studios. All studios belong to Activision.
This means that an extremely large number of developers are tinkering with Destiny 2, and thus the promise may sound realistic that after the launch of the sequel, fresh content can be delivered in significantly shorter intervals.
