Destiny 2 Shadowkeep is full of secrets waiting to be discovered by you. One of these puzzles is the many dead Guardians on the Moon. A T-shirt reveals what is behind the floating corpses.
Wait, which corpses? In recent trailers for the Destiny 2 expansion “Shadowkeep”, numerous floating Guardians have appeared on the Moon. However, they are all dead. They float there as a kind of shadowy corpses.
The Bungie Store Brings Clarity
What is up with these corpses? Many Guardians have speculated about this since the first sighting. A T-shirt from the official Bungie Store could now provide some insight. The shirt features five of these corpses. The product description reveals that these five Guardians belong to the former fireteam of Eris Morn. They once delved deep beneath the surface of the Moon along with Eris and with the exception of Eris, did not return alive.
Experienced players had speculated about this. However, it now finally clarifies where the other corpses come from.
The floating dead Guardians are the victims of the Great Disaster – a battle that took place on the Moon where they confronted Crota, the Hive Prince. Crota consumed the light of the Guardians in this battle, which have now apparently been activated by the actions of Eris in the context of the Shadowkeep story.
This is the Story Behind It
This is what we know about the Great Disaster: After the Vanguard became aware of the existence of the Hive on the Moon, they decided to fight against this enemy. However, Lord Shaxx was convinced that this was not a wise decision. He warned against the powerful Ascendant Swords and the Knights of the Hive. According to Shaxx, the swords are unlike any other weapon and extremely powerful.

However, the warning was ignored and thus a battle broke out on the Moon. In this battle, hundreds of Guardians died, and Crota stole their light. His Hive army was far superior to the Vanguard and their warriors, and thus the battle went down in history as “The Great Disaster.” Only a few survived the fight, and since then, the Moon has been considered a forbidden zone. From this moment on, it should only be visited if absolutely necessary.
Formation of Eris’ Fireteam Among the few survivors of the battle was also Eriana-3. She swore revenge on Crota and formed a fireteam with five other Guardians. Eris Morn was a member of this group. In Destiny lore, the strike team is known as the first Crota fireteam or Eris’s fireteam.
Together, they returned to the Moon to confront the Hive and avenge all the dead Guardians. However, only Eris Morn survived this journey into the Hellmouth, where Crota nested. Her five companions were killed and since then have also been part of the floating corpses on the Moon.

How does all of this fit into Shadowkeep? As already known, we need to return to the Moon in the new expansion. We will encounter the floating, dead Guardians at various locations there. It is also well known that both Eris Morn and the Hive will play a significant role again. After all, the Hive now has a huge fortress there, and we need to find out what exactly is behind it.
We also know that Eris Morn has come across a dark power that we will fight on the Moon.
Since the first trailer, fans have speculated whether the floating shadows could really be Eris’ fireteam. The T-shirt from the store has now put an end to this speculation. Additionally, it finally clarifies what is behind the many floating corpses on the Moon.
Could you already guess what was behind the floating shadows?
