In Year 1 of Destiny, there were numerous powerful exotic hand cannons that Guardians loved to use. However, if one wanted to use the exo slot for a different weapon type but still didn’t want to give up a hand cannon, the Fatebringer was the first choice.
The Fatebringer was considered the strongest legendary hand cannon in Year 1. After being left behind in Year 2, Guardians searched on their hand cannons (like the Imago Loop) for the “Fatebringer roll.” This consisted of Outlaw, Explosive Rounds, and Firefly – a deadly mix for PvE to mow through hordes of adds.
The special thing about the Fatebringer was, besides the brilliant perk combination, the Arc damage, which made it an indispensable PvE weapon. Even in Year 1, primary weapons with elemental damage were rare and sought after, and the Fatebringer stood out here. With the Crota expansion, the gun faced tough competition from “Crota’s Word” – a legendary hand cannon that dealt Void damage. However, the cult around the Fatebringer did not come close to Crota’s Word.
Since the Age of Triumph, two versions of the Fatebringer have returned: One legendary version without Arc damage and one exotic adept version with Arc damage. However, since hand cannons have been increasingly nerfed in the last patches, “Year 1” feelings with the Fatebringer are no longer properly coming back.
