Daisy Ridley, whom most probably know from the sequels of Star Wars, talks three years after one of her biggest flops about what went wrong during the filming of the film.
Which movie is it about? The film is titled Chaos Walking and is from the year 2021. The story takes place in a dystopian future where there are no women left. Furthermore, all living beings have the ability to listen to each other’s thoughts.
In Chaos Walking, alongside Daisy Ridley, stars like Tom Holland and Mads Mikkelsen also feature. The director Doug Liman is hardly a stranger either. He directed films such as The Bourne Identity and Edge of Tomorrow, which may receive a sequel.
Unfortunately, Chaos Walking turned into a colossal flop. With a budget of around 95 million €, it only grossed 27 million worldwide. Since a film in Hollywood must earn double its budget to be considered a success, Chaos Walking missed this requirement by far.
Daisy Ridley has commented on the film and shared her experiences from the set.
A shoot full of difficulties
What does the actress say? Three years after the film’s release, Daisy Ridley recalls the filming, which was accompanied by some difficulties. Director Doug Liman brought his own, unusual working methods to the set.
In an interview with Empire (via screenrant.com), Ridley describes working on a specific scene:
Doug [Liman] works differently than most people I’ve worked with. Very spontaneous. But during this scene, I remember the sheer fear of playing someone who can’t swim and going into a pretty fast-flowing river. I can swim, but when you play someone who can’t swim, you panic.

The scene became an unpleasant experience for the actress. She herself says that she loved the idea of the film.
Further difficulties were also caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to delays in the release date. The film was pushed back further and further because many cinemas were simply closed.
In 2021, the film was finally released – but in Germany not in theaters, but directly on DVD or streaming. However, Daisy Ridley doesn’t seem to look back too much. Ultimately, it was a job she did diligently. After filming ended, she left the set and watched as the film turned into a financial flop. “What can you do?” she says about it today.
Chaos Walking was, therefore, despite its renowned cast, not a success. This shows that a star ensemble is not everything. However, the film must be credited for not being released at an ideal time. In Daisy Ridley’s filmography, Chaos Walking will likely not play a major role in the future.
