Roy Cronacher worked at ArenaNet as a designer for the MMORPG Guild Wars 2 until May 2018. He has now started his own studio, aiming to shake up the mobile games market. He wants to take ideas from PC and console games and create great games for tablet and smartphone with his team.
Who is Roy Cronacher? Cronacher worked as a game design team leader at ArenaNet and was co-responsible for the MMORPG Guild Wars 2. He developed the Revenant class. In May 2018, he left the company.
A Mobile Game at PC Level
What is Cronacher doing now? As has been reported, he founded his own development studio, Tenacious Entertainment. Together with some former colleagues from ArenaNet, he is already working on a new game.
For his company, he has already secured 3.3 million dollars from investors.
What kind of title is it? Tenacious Entertainment aims to create mobile games, but they want to differ from the mobile games we are currently experiencing.
Accordingly, a first mobile game is currently in the works, which is a PvP arena combat game.
When will the game be released? No exact release date has been specified yet, but it is expected to be released in 2020.
What is special about the mobile games? Cronacher states that he wants to take concepts that have proven themselves on PC and console and present them to the mobile mass market. Essentially, he aims to develop mobile games that are on par with PC or console games.
Moreover, he wants to completely avoid pay-to-win mechanics. The games are meant to shake up the mobile market and offer something new and innovative.
Teams Leaving ArenaNet, Founding Their Own Studios
Why does this sound familiar? Roy Cronacher is not the only former ArenaNet employee who has now founded a new studio. The former founder of ArenaNet and ex-president Mike O’Brien has also launched a new company.
The studio ManaWorks also consists of former developers from ArenaNet. Mike O’Brien and his team, however, apparently want to create a new MMO.
Why is this curious? From ArenaNet, where there have been some layoffs recently, two new studios have now formed, which are working on interesting projects. It is quite possible that the games will carry some of the atmosphere of the Guild Wars titles.
However, we will have to wait a little longer before we learn more about the games.
