Tanjiro Kamado is the protagonist of Demon Slayer. In search of a cure for his sister, he faces numerous demons. However, there are two characteristics that were actually not intended for the demon slayer from the beginning.
What characteristics are they? While Tanjiro stands out with his checkered outfit, that was not enough for the editor Tatsuhiko Katayama. He asked the manga’s creator (Koyoharu Gotouge) to revise Tanjiro to make him look less boring (via MANGA Plus).
Therefore, Gotouge added two traits that have become an important part of Tanjiro:
- His sun earrings
- His scar on the face
While the editor thought the earrings would make Tanjiro look a bit feminine, ultimately, the design was approved. For the anime, however, other elements had to be added to make it more appealing for viewers. Thanks to the editor, the protagonist received the appearance we recognize from both the manga and the anime.

What role do they play in the story? Tanjiro received his earrings from his father. They symbolize the sun breathing, which becomes increasingly important throughout the story. In the anime, only Tanjiro and his father are known to master this breathing technique so far.
It was the first breathing technique invented by Yoriichi Tsugikuni. All other breathing techniques are derived from it.
The scar has also taken on an essential role. It is actually a mark for demon slayers. Both Tanjiro and the creator of the sun breathing had such a mark on their faces. Over the course of the anime, the color and shape of the marking on Tanjiro’s face change, indicating that it is not just an ordinary scar.
Originally, the scar was explained as something Tanjiro got when he wanted to protect his brother from a kettle of hot water. However, this marking has now even awakened and grants Tanjiro special powers.
