Even demon hunters finally get a third specialization in World of Warcraft. We reveal what the new “Devourer” can do.
For several months, there has been speculation, and now there is finally certainty. With the next expansion of World of Warcraft, Midnight, the demon hunter class will receive a new specialization. The “Devourer” utilizes the power of the Void and could become a bit of an oddball. Just like the Dracthyr, this demon hunter is expected to operate at “medium range”.
You can take a brief look at it in the gameplay trailer for Midnight:
What can the new specialization do? Although details are still scarce, Blizzard has already revealed a few specifics. The Devourer demon hunter will be a character with “medium range,” likely similar to the Callers. Fitting the Void theme, this demon hunter will have many bluish-black effects that manipulate cosmic magic.
Abilities include:
- Void Metamorphosis: The complete transformation into a demon, similar to what other specializations have – only significantly more filled with the Void.
- Collapsing Star: A powerful finisher that deals high damage.
- Void Ray: A beam of Void energy that penetrates multiple targets.
- Harvest: A cone attack that consumes soul fragments.
- Void Blade and Hungry Strike: A melee combo that ends with a retreat to distance.

Which race can also become a demon hunter? With the Midnight expansion, Void Elves will also be able to train as demon hunters. This makes sense from a development perspective, as Void Elves share the same animations with Blood Elves, so not many new effects need to be created.
Patch 11.2 teased new demon hunters
Where was the new specialization hinted at? Those who have been paying attention to the quests on K’aresh may have already found some clues. During a questline, a Void Elf attempts to collaborate with a demon hunter. The Void Elf promises to assist the demon hunter in researching the Void, provided the demon hunter teaches her the rituals and practices of the Illidari – that is, the demon hunters. Even though the experiments fail, and the corresponding demon hunter later becomes a boss in the Mana Forge Omega, it seems that the research has advanced enough to make Void Elves into demon hunters.
Will you try the new specialization with Midnight and create a Void Elf demon hunter? Or do you have no interest in this class, and the new options do not entice you?
