Cortyn has tried the Demon Hunter in World of Warcraft is a strong recommendation for anyone just wanting to have fun in WoW.
In World of Warcraft, there comes a time when you’re dissatisfied with your main character. For me, this time has come with Battle for Azeroth: I am unhappy with my Shadow Priest.
I held onto my Shadow Priest for years. Since the creation of my Blood Elf in The Burning Crusade, the Shadow Priest has always been what I wanted to play. This started as a “Mana battery” in Karazhan with healing support and continued through many addons, during which we first became DoT masters and only went mad with Legion.
Meanwhile, the Shadow Priest gives me little joy, even though he will always be “my main”. At least hope dies only with Patch 8.1, if no improvements occur.
It was time for something new, so I pulled out another character that I had just leveled to level 120 – my Demon Hunter.
Somehow I feel a bit silly that I only now, one addon too late, gave this class and specialization a real chance. But back then, the whole thing was just too “edgy” for me, and with every “I sacrificed everything” from the NPCs, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes. After a cool Demon Hunter machinima, I started thinking about becoming a Demon Hunter.
Now I somewhat regret that I tried this class so late.
Demon Hunters are easy to play
And now we come to the part that will surely anger some players because I “have no idea”. But: Demon Hunters are easy to play, at least in PvE. Without any extensive preparation, I just did a heroic dungeon with a few friends and tried out being a Vengeance Demon Hunter. I had always leveled as a tank.
To put it this way: In the first mob group, I had a laughing fit, and a Fire Mage with a bruised self-esteem whispered in Discord, “This class should be deleted…”
Yes, I too found the damage ridiculous. And the impression remained that way throughout the entire dungeon. Whether I was frying everything with my Eye Beam or darting through enemies with my Blade Dance, everything felt smooth and action-packed.
This even distracts from the fact that the class actually only needs five buttons in dungeons. Or a maximum of six if you count that one 4-minute cooldown.
That is exactly the fresh change I was looking for. I don’t have to dot five mobs in a row and then meticulously ensure that my Shadow Word: Pain doesn’t fall off anywhere while managing my Voidform and keeping my insanity as high as possible.
Instead, I stand in front of a group, hit twice, activate the Eye Beam, and cannot help but grin from ear to ear. This is mainly because every hit of this ability is a critical hit. So with ten enemies, every 0.5 seconds, ten critical hits fly across the screen. It feels powerful and good.
Those wanting relaxation should play Demon Hunters
In summary, I can only say: Demon Hunters are a lot of fun in Battle for Azeroth. They are easy to play, and it is hard to play them really “badly.” Sure, professionals can get a lot more out of the class, but even as a beginner with the class, you achieve more than solid results.
Is that a particularly great gameplay achievement? Certainly not. Is it fun if you just want to relax and play a DPS? Absolutely.
So my recommendation to anyone who doesn’t want to deal too much with exact rotations and DPS maximizations or is unhappy with their current class: Just try a Demon Hunter. It’s very easy fun. But sometimes that is exactly right.
