In this guide to Monster Hunter World, you will get tips on how to defeat the Behemoth. You will learn about the beast’s weaknesses, including which element and status effects are best to fight it. Here you will find the right strategy.
What is special about the Behemoth? The Behemoth brings two unique mechanics to Monster Hunter World: magic and aggro.
Magic: You need to pay special attention to the Behemoth’s spells, as they make the fight harder. You can observe which spell the Behemoth is casting on the right side of the screen and must react accordingly. The Behemoth has four phases, and each new phase is initiated with the spell “Meteor”.
Aggro: This is a mechanic typical in MMORPGs. When the monster has built aggro, it focuses all its attention on one player. Aggro is indicated by a red line between the Behemoth and the player.

All Spells of the Behemoth Explained: Learn What Strategy You Need
To win, you must smartly respond to the spells: Simply mindlessly attacking the Elder Dragon won’t help you. You will lose anyway. Each spell requires a specific response from you to survive its attacks.
Keep an eye on the info boxes: Throughout the fight, the spells that the Behemoth will use next will be displayed on the right. You must watch these and plan your next steps every time, and above all, coordinate with your team.
These are the spells:
Meteor
A wide area attack: The Behemoth casts Meteor on random players. A reddish area will then appear around it.
Stay in motion: It is recommended to keep moving and continuously evade the attack.
Summons Comet
The Behemoth summons stones: The spell follows you, and stones/comets will be placed where you walk with your hunter. You can recognize this by a small red area under your feet.
Place the stones where you can reach them: You need the stones as protection to survive the spell “Ecliptic Meteor.” The stones will do you no good at the edge of the battlefield.
Draw the Behemoth away from the stones: The Behemoth will destroy the stones if it gets too close to them. Here you can also use the aggro mechanic to move the Behemoth away from the stones.
Ecliptic Meteor
The mother of all meteors falls from the sky: This is the strongest spell the Behemoth casts. A massive meteor falls from the sky and triggers a gigantic shockwave that can instantly take your life.
Hide: This is where the stones from “Summons Comet” come into play. Hide behind them so that you are not hit by the shockwave.
Thunderstorm
Lightning spells that rain down from above: The Behemoth casts elongated lightning strikes that sporadically hit the ground in a relatively small area.
Watch the sky: If you see that Thunderstorm is announced, tilt your camera slightly upward and step back a bit. This way you can observe where the lightning comes from and evade if necessary.
Carybdis
The Behemoth places wind areas beneath players: When the Behemoth uses Carybdis, it places a wind area under each player.
Stay together: It is advisable to stand close together with the team so that the wind area is contained in one area. If you have too many wind areas, you will have fewer escape routes for the Behemoth’s other attacks.
Lightning capsules when the head is blue: You can interrupt Carybdis if you throw lightning capsules at the Behemoth. This works only when the Behemoth’s head glows blue.
Tips: What You Should Also Consider in the Fight with the Beast
The Behemoth is designed for four players: The Behemoth is one of the most difficult monsters in the game and is easiest to fight in a well-coordinated group. However, the emphasis here is on coordination. A headset and communication should be mandatory for this fight.
Use aggro to draw attention to one player: Those who attack the Behemoth’s head will likely draw its aggro (attention) to themselves. This should be done by players who have a defensive build and appropriate weapons. The Gunlance or Sword & Shield would be a good choice here.
While the Behemoth focuses on the defensive player, others can strike him as hard as they can or retreat to heal.
The aggro mechanic can also largely be ignored: You don’t necessarily have to use aggro and therefore do not need a “tank” in the team. The Behemoth can also be defeated if you fight him well-coordinated and master his spells. Moreover, the Behemoth will follow you even without aggro.
The Behemoth has three attack patterns for physical damage:
- It stands on its hind legs and performs a kind of belly flop that can paralyze you
- It has a charge attack where it lunges quickly to the side with its shoulder
- It grabs you with its foreleg and tosses you away
The Behemoth casts a fire area when its head is red: When the Behemoth’s head and eyes glow red, it will cast fire that deals area damage. You should keep your distance from its head.
The Behemoth can be put to sleep: The Behemoth has a weakness of two stars against the sleep status. If you manage to put it to sleep, place your barrel bombs as close to its head as possible. This will also help you break its horns.
Sever the tail as quickly as possible: The Behemoth can deal powerful blows with its tail that really hurt. However, the tail is severable and also contains loot for the Behemoth’s armor.
Bring lightning capsules against the spell “Charybdis”: This is a spell where the Behemoth casts a wind area on players. He uses this spell as soon as his head glows blue. Once the head is blue, throw a lightning capsule at it.

Charles has created a guide for you, highlighting the various spells of the Behemoth. Here you can take a close look at the individual attacks and study them. He also gives an insight into the Dragoon armor that you can farm in the quest.
The Behemoth is hard – Don’t be sad if it doesn’t work right away: The Behemoth is definitely one of the hardest fights in the game, requiring a clever tactic and teamwork. He is difficult for “casual” hunters to master and requires some experience.
Therefore, there’s no reason to be frustrated if it doesn’t work immediately. Many veterans also struggle with the Behemoth.
By the way, there’s a little trick to get the Behemoth’s armor without having to kill him.
