On September 22, 2009, the post-apocalyptic MMORPG Fallen Earth launched. In 2019, it was closed in a spectacular event, and the servers were shut down for the last time, or so it was thought. Now the game is back and does not want you to pay for it.
What happened to Fallen Earth? The post-apocalyptic MMORPG closed its servers in 2019 and ended its life cycle with a big event. At that time, a large monster fought against the players and flattened everything before the game was shut down.
On Twitter, the developers announced at that time that it would not be the end of Fallen Earth and that they were working on a version 2. So far, there have only been sparse information about it.
But now the CEO of the developers speaks up first via Twitter and then in the official forum, announcing that the old version of the game will be brought back. But different than you think.
The new version is not finished yet, but to make the wait more pleasant for the players, the developers have decided to restart the old servers. But not only that, as the version has been adjusted and improved.
What’s new in the old version? Originally, Fallen Earth was a Pay2Play MMORPG, which means it was a game where you had to pay monthly to continue playing. This changed in 2011, but there were still three different optional subscription models that offered advantages.
The developers emphasize that this classic version of Fallen Earth is simply there to have fun and to be able to play the game again. Therefore, all players will automatically have the benefits of the highest subscription tier. The game itself costs nothing, and there will not be an in-game shop.
Further changes are as follows:
- The developers have worked a lot on the structure of the servers in the background. Because of this, carrying over progress from 2019 is no longer possible, and everyone has to start completely from scratch.
- However, the new-old version is already running on Steam, where you can now play it.
- There will not be any contents from the online shop for the time being, as it has been completely shut down, and the developer does not want you to spend money.
More details have not been disclosed by the forum post so far. There should be another post when the classic servers actually go live. That should happen “soon”.
The community celebrates the developer
How is the community reacting? Although the game has been shut down for two years, Fallen Earth still enjoys a relatively active community. They are very pleased with the announcement and about being able to play the game again.
Some, however, see this as a signal that the originally announced version 2 will now take longer to arrive than many originally thought. The general tone of the comments is rather positive.
What do the fans say? They are happy and celebrate Matt Scott, the CEO of the development studio for the post in the forum (via gamersfirst.com).
- User Sara Werner writes: ‘Oh my God. I can’t wait to get back into the game.’
- NysekZePope shows less enthusiasm: ‘It’s sad to see that I can’t play my character anymore or get my crafting kit, too bad. I will still play it.’
- User Tripp is really excited: ‘I can’t wait for this great game to come back. I have thought about this game more over the years than about others. I can’t wait to jump back into my pink suit and meet in the next bar for some real old-school role-playing.’
- Kuddleminski also can hardly believe it: ‘Thank you so much! I have missed this game a lot and can’t wait to experience new stories with all my friends.’
Many comments in the forum are just various expressions of joy. The community is very excited about the announcement. You can read plenty of comments like ‘yay’ or ‘omg’. The mood is very positive.
