The colorful rainbow flag in Dead by Daylight is causing problems. Because it creates some uncomfortable discussions.
Currently, many games have smaller events or celebrations around “Pride Month”. In Dead by Daylight, there is at least one small detail, as players can obtain a Pride flag as a charm. With the rainbow flag, survivors and killers can show their affiliation or solidarity with the “LGBTQ+” community.
However, the small charm in the form of the Pride flag sparks many discussions. And for hardly any of them is there a satisfactory answer.
If you want to have the charm in Dead by Daylight for both killers and survivors, just head to the game’s shop. There you can “redeem a code” and simply enter the word “PRIDE”. You will get the charm and can adorn the hooks of your killer or the waist of your survivors with it.
Most of you will probably shrug your shoulders and think: “A Pride flag in Dead by Daylight. Okay. Whoever wants to use it can do so, and those who don’t, simply won’t.” This is likely how most feel – but unfortunately not everyone.
What is the problem? Although the Pride flag as a charm is well-received by many, there are concerns. Some players fear that by using the charm, they might become the target of harassment of all kinds in Dead by Daylight. Some survivors fear that by doing so, they are essentially declaring themselves a primary target for homophobic killer players, while killers and survivors worry that simply using the charm could expose them to more hostility and different types of trolling attempts.
However, the argument works in reverse as well. On the other hand, there is concern that survivors might always carry the Pride flag to deter killers from hanging or killing those survivors first. Because then the survivor could simply claim: “The killer tunneled and focused on me just because of the Pride flag.”
Targeted attacks can lead to penalties: A final concern is that players with the Pride flag may frequently be reported by others to bully them and possibly lead to an account ban.
However, the developers of Dead by Daylight have already clarified that some of these concerns are unfounded. If players use the reporting system, the cases are reviewed individually. As stated by the official Twitter account of Dead by Daylight:
A brief announcement: Targeting people specifically because they use the charm is targeted harassment. Anyone who decides to do so will be punished.
To clarify, we do not issue bans without evidence. Offenses that lead to bans include griefing, hate speech, repeated harassment, and more.
While this is certainly a commendable statement, other players point out that there is likely no way to clearly determine why players are harassed and whether the charm is really the reason for it.
However you turn it, the Pride flag causes some discussions in Dead by Daylight, for which there are hardly any satisfactory answers.
Basically, one can only appeal to everyone: Kill everyone with the same zeal and only report those who truly deserve it.
A Pride event is also making headlines in other games – such as League of Legends, as one country is not participating.
