Dead by Daylight seems to lose another killer [Update]

Another killer is likely to be removed from Dead by Daylight. Which license will the developers lose this time?

Update 19.01.2023: Behaviour Interactive has now commented on the rumors and denied them. Leatherface will remain in Dead by Daylight for the foreseeable future, and the developers stated:

“Thank you for taking the time to address the rumors regarding Leatherface’s departure from Dead by Daylight. We can inform you that Leatherface will continue to be a part of Dead by Daylight. He is here to stay!”

The DbD account has also clarified on Twitter that Leatherface will stay. So you can still be camped in the basement.

Original report: Dead by Daylight is a game that has almost continually grown over the last 7 years. However, at least in terms of content, the horror game has already experienced a setback, as the developers lost the “Stranger Things” license after a few years. Now a second killer could face the same fate and could disappear from the game. We are talking about Leatherface, also known as “Bubba” from “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”.

Where does the rumor come from? There are already initial hints in the PTB for the next patch. Data miners had found some new clues in the game files. Leatherface’s known perks have received additional lines of code that suggest the perks will soon receive “alternative names”.

This was also the case with the “Stranger Things” chapter. When the characters were removed from sale, all of the characters’ perks were renamed, turning them into “free” perks that could be unlocked by everyone.

A second hint at Leatherface’s disappearance comes from the Twitter account “DbDLeaks”. While this is not an official Twitter account of Dead by Daylight, this account has reliably leaked data from upcoming events and happenings in the past few years. DbDLeaks wrote on January 6:

Farewell, Bubba. Enjoy your last months in the fog. I will forever miss being camped by you in the basement.

Is it likely? Unfortunately, yes. This is primarily due to the fact that the “Texas Chainsaw Massacre” franchise wants to release its own horror game that is set to come out in 2023. It seems likely that the creators want to secure the exclusive rights to the franchise in order to have Leatherface in their game – and not also in another game.

What would this mean? If Dead by Daylight really loses the license for “Texas Chainsaw Massacre”, then – as was the case with Stranger Things – the character would likely be removed from sale. New players would then no longer be able to access the killer. However, players who have already purchased the character and its perks in the past are likely to keep and continue using it, just like it was with the Demogorgon, Nancy, and Steve.

An official announcement from Dead by Daylight regarding this matter is still pending, but those who haven’t acquired Leatherface yet should probably prepare internally to do so in the coming weeks – before it might be too late.
