A new trailer for Dead by Daylight raises hopes for much more story. Especially cool – the characters from SAW seem to play an important role.
The asymmetrical horror game Dead by Daylight is a whole lot, but certainly not a game that puts a particularly great focus on its story. This has changed bit by bit over the past few years with the introduction of the “Archives”, but slowly but surely, the developers seem to be making even more efforts in this direction.
For the 10th book in the Archives has a trailer that raises many questions, answers some of them, and even makes it clear: Dead by Daylight loves to incorporate other works into its own narrative, such as SAW.
What’s the trailer about? The video shows the Observer. He is one of the people trapped in the world of the Entity. Unlike the other “Survivors”, he possesses a relic, the “Auris”. This allows him to remain unseen in the realm of the Entity while exploring the memories of the other captives.
In the latest video, he attempts this again and delves deep into a memory, but something strange happens. Instead of merely seeing someone’s memory, he encounters the infamous Jigsaw doll from the SAW universe.
This suggests that he has likely penetrated the memories of Detective Tapp or Amanda Young (the killer “Pig”). However, the Jigsaw doll speaks directly to the Observer and explains in classic SAW fashion that he is part of a game. The necessary puzzle piece to “escape from this world” is supposedly right in front of the Observer – he just needs to overcome his own obsession to see what lies “behind” it.
What’s in the book? The 10th book is again full of unlockable cosmetic items – it’s basically the “Season Pass” of Dead by Daylight. However, the story snippets that can be unlocked through individual challenges are available to all players. It seems that this time we will learn a lot about the Observer, the world of the Entity, and some new details about the SAW characters.
It is also clear that Dead by Daylight will not become a game where the story is massively in focus. But it is a nice addition, and has been gradually expanded and told in small bites over the years. The fact that an announcement trailer for a new Rift now puts such a strong emphasis on SAW and the Observer is a novelty. For the first time, the option to escape from the world of the Entity comes within reach – if that is not just another lie from the Entity in the form of the little Jigsaw doll.
Story fans who always hoped for “more” from Dead by Daylight are likely to get their fill here.
When can you play it? The new part of the “Archives” and thus the rewards of the Rift can be played starting tomorrow, January 26, 2022. Usually, the unlocking occurs in the evening hours, so you can properly start on January 27 to earn the new story bites and the cosmetic rewards.
What else is in the patch? A whole lot of small changes that could have big impacts. Especially, the monthly earnings of Bloodpoints will be drastically increased through the “Grade” system – players will receive up to 300% more Bloodpoints, depending on performance.
Another innovation is the ability to toggle the controls. From now on, it will no longer be necessary to hold down a button the whole time to work on a generator or heal a teammate. Instead, a single press of the corresponding button is enough – after that, you just have to react to skill checks. This is supposed to prevent players from having to hold down a mouse button all the time just to work on the generator.
