Apparently, the servers of the sandbox MMO Albion Online have been hit by DDoS attacks. At first, it was thought that this could be the revenge of gold sellers. Instead, the German development studio was being extorted.
As Albion Online reports, they were the target of a DDoS attack over the weekend. This sometimes happens to new MMORPGs.
In the beginning, on Saturday, Sandbox Interactive thought: These DDoS attacks were a retaliation because they took action against gold sellers. It was suspected that the DDoS attackers wanted to punish Albion Online for interfering in their illegal businesses.
Ultimately, it resolved differently. At Albion Online, they then told the fans: We have also received a ransom demand.
The fans discussed what it could be about. Maybe a super hacker just wants his banned account to be reinstated, but that was not the case: The DDoS attackers simply wanted money.
Meanwhile, Albion Online has the situation back under control.
DDoS Attack Ruins Developers’ Relaxed Weekend
In a further statement, the head of Albion Online says they would like to share details of the matter when everything is resolved.
The DDoS attack ruined the team’s plans for the weekend.
Originally, the team had hoped this weekend would be the first weekend after the stressful launch days where they could relax and unwind. That didn’t happen.
Albion Online is currently considered a surprise hit. The indie MMORPG has had a much stronger influx of visitors at launch than initially planned.
