The online shooter Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 will receive a massive Day One patch on PS4 and Xbox One at launch. It is almost as large as the entire game and especially annoys buyers of a physical version of the game.
What is the Day One patch? Like many games today, the new Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 from Treyarch will already have its first patch at launch. This “Day One patch” is quite significant. It includes approximately 50 gigabytes of data on PS4 and Xbox One.
In comparison: The entire game should be about 55 gigabytes in size. This means that almost the whole game will be revised in one way or another at launch.
Those with the disk version are at a disadvantage
That’s terrible, doesn’t that mean I can’t play right away? It depends on which version of Black Ops 4 you bought. If you downloaded the digital version via the internet, the patch can basically be irrelevant to you.
Thanks to pre-load, you should be able to download the current version right away. Just remember to start the pre-load on time, otherwise you’ll also be waiting ages while your friends are already playing.
Warning for PlayStation 4 players: On Sony’s PlayStation 4, you need to create enough space on the hard drive. Due to the internal storage management, you require around 112 gigabytes of free space to download the game. However, this should then return to the normal size of about 55 GB after installation.
The physical version must be completely patched: Unfortunately, the situation is different for the disk version. Anyone who wants the game in hand must fully patch the game after installation and download the 50 gigabytes.
Battle Royale less affected
But is there no way to play faster? If you really want to play the zombie and regular multiplayer mode right away, then you unfortunately have to patch everything.
However, if you just want to try out the new battle royale mode Blackout, then you are in luck. This mode is supposed to run after only 16 to 20 gigabytes (about 30 percent of the total download). That should go somewhat faster than downloading the full 50 gigabytes.
