Our author Schuhmann says that The Dawning 2018 is the best event in Destiny 2 so far. But Bungie still needs to refine the name.
This is how Christmas works in Destiny: In Destiny 2, we don’t celebrate Christmas, but “The Dawning.” In English, that sounds much more appealing as “The Dawning” and suggests that a new year is about to start.
This year, Guardians are baking, which is cooler than it sounds.
The players collect three different ingredients:
- One is obtained depending on which aliens you kill
- The second one is based on how you defeat the aliens
- And the third one is just available in large quantities for completing activities
Then you sit down with your oven, check the Christmas recipe book on MeinMMO and combine the ingredients to bake cookies and give them to selected NPCs in the game.
That’s why it’s so great: The best part of the event: Everything is just a bonus. Destiny 2 does not force you to farm some lame activity 50 times that you have no interest in just to get a reward.
- You simply play what you already enjoy – in my case Gambit – and are rewarded for it
- The nature of the event encourages you to play a bit differently than you’re used to. For example, it made me switch to a sword and Void skills for the first time
- Moreover, the event is surprisingly generous. Handing in all the cookies yields quite a few items and on the regular quest path, you receive a pretty cool Christmas Sparrow.
That’s why I’m playing more Destiny 2 than before: Okay, the rewards are surely not enough to excite people who want to reach Power Level 650 and unlock those weird new forges, but it has brought me significantly closer to 600 in the last few days.
Besides, I just feel more inclined to play Destiny 2 beyond the milestones when I can work towards baking all 12 cookies.
For me, The Dawning is a well-executed event. It allows players to do what they want, rewards them, and gently nudges them to try something new.
What annoys? The only thing that annoys me is the name “The Dawning”: It just doesn’t fit with Christmas in German, rather reminds me of a half-empty beer barrel.
After the German translation recently changed the “Veterans Package” at the last minute to “Gratitude Package” when the Guardians protested on MeinMMO, I still hope that we will get a similarly good event in 2019, but hopefully with a better name for it.
One can wish for something at Christmas, right?
