At first glance, D.Va with her cute face, subtle pink accents, and bunny patch does not seem to be a particularly complex character, yet she is especially popular among Korean female gamers.
They see her as a feminist icon. But before you run away because of the dreaded F-word, let me reassure you: No, this will not be an article that looks down on men. I would be far too small for that anyway.
D.Va as an Icon of Feminism in South Korea
For the first time, the Korean feminist connection “National D.Va Association” – or short: “For D.Va” – made a public appearance on January 21, 2017, during the Women’s March. On this date, men and women peacefully protested worldwide under the banner of emancipation, but actually mainly against U.S. President Donald Trump, who had celebrated his inauguration the day before.
Suddenly, a photo of “For D.Va’s” banner appeared on Twitter, and the official kickoff was given.
In a country where, according to statements from some Korean women, sexual harassment via Teamspeak and similar platforms in online games is common, and women first have to prove that they have truly succeeded at the top without cheating D.Va represents the perfect representation that women can also play, have bite, and do not have to be in the minority.

D.Va represents the desire that in 2060 it could be completely normal for there to be women like D.Va. Women who are strong and confident, without facing hostility or accusations. Who can reach the top of a global leaderboard without being doubted, insulted, or even threatened. Who can simply enjoy their love for video games.

How to Become a Feminist Icon – in 3 Steps
- Step 1: One becomes a pro in a male-dominated field and fights their way to the top.
- Example: D.Va was a StarCraft world champion and currently fights in a special elite unit for the Korean military.
- Step 2: One does not show too much bare skin during appearances, while still not losing their attractiveness.
- Example: D.Va wears a tight suit but is covered. Okay, sometimes she overdoes it a bit with the Brokeback pose.
- Step 3: One should occasionally remember their roots. This strengthens the sense of belonging and honors the considered culture.
- Example: D.Va wears a traditional dress, called Hanbok, at the event “The Year of the Rooster.”
D.Va is not just another sex symbol but a fighter who always has a witty remark on her lips and knows what she wants: to win. The fact that she is also a nerd with whom many female players can identify adds to her appeal. She comes across as likable and is at a height on an imaginary attractiveness scale that makes her relatable.

But enough of the political lecture! I find it nice that she is a gamer who does not primarily cater to clichés but is actually determined and strong.
