Cyberpunk in an online world? That doesn’t seem so unrealistic, as the mysterious “Codename: SYN” might just hit the nail on the head.
Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the major story games that is eagerly awaited this year. Since its announcement, the Cyberpunk genre has seemingly gained some momentum as more and more developers are dedicated to creating neon-colored futuristic worlds. The Chinese company Tencent has also taken on such a project, currently running under the name “Codename SYN”. The first video shows excerpts from the project.
What is shown in the video? The first tech demo of SYN shows only a few aspects of the game, which are still just a rough concept. The game is supposed to take place in the year 2035. The world has since evidently changed significantly and is much closer to a dystopian Cyberpunk reality.
Because real friends are somehow “meh”, women apparently have cybernetic animals as loyal companions, accompanying them in their street battles. Battles? Yes, because SYN is supposed to be an “open world FPS”. However, it is unclear how many players share a world and how often they encounter each other.
The video places a clear focus on the art style and the look of character creation. At least visually, this demo can absolutely convince – even if the big eyes look a bit creepy.
SYN is still a long way from being playable: However, it must also be clearly stated that SYN is still only a pure tech demo and is in an extremely early state. Even if the game is supposed to be an “open world FPS”, all the shown elements should be taken with caution. So far, the developers only want to show their rough vision for the game and demonstrate what is possible with the engine.
When is the game supposed to be released? No details have been provided yet. Given the early development stage, which has so far been nothing more than a tech demo, one should not expect it in 2020 or 2021. Unless, of course, the developers from Lightspeed & Quantum Studios, who also made PUBG Mobile, really buckle down.
Whether the game will ultimately meet expectations – whenever it is finished – and satisfy the hunger for a “Cyberpunk Online” remains to be seen. If there are any news about it, you will find out here at Mein-MMO.de.
Until then, we might dabble in another MMO – a world like in Sword Art Online perhaps?
