The upcoming RPG Cyberpunk 2077 aims to focus on online features. This is intended to allow the developers to generate constant revenue. The goal is to be commercially more successful than The Witcher 3.
One of the most eagerly anticipated RPGs of the coming years is likely to be Cyberpunk 2077. The team at CD Projekt Red has to meet high expectations, as the game will surely be compared to the last mega hit, The Witcher 3.
Fans expect Cyberpunk 2077 to be a top-notch single-player RPG set in the dark future of our world. However, not much is known about the game yet; the developers are only teasing the different classes or small snippets of information from time to time.
The CEO of CD Projekt Red, Adam Kiciński, spoke with the Polish site Strefa Inwestorow about the future of the company, and a buzzword came up: online features.
In the studio, they hope that Cyberpunk 2077 will be financially more successful than The Witcher 3.
“Online features are necessary or at least highly recommended if you want long-term success.” And they apparently want that with Cyberpunk 2077, as it has been confirmed that the game will have online functionalities. However, details are not yet disclosed.
The most common theory is that there will be a “social HUB” in the game, perhaps a bar or a specific district where single-player and multiplayer blend together. Those who want could look for other players at this location and engage in special multiplayer missions.
Talking about an “MMO” would, however, be exaggerated for Cyberpunk 2077. At its core, the game will probably be a single-player title, as several (unconfirmed) leaks suggest.
Connections between major games and “service games” like Gwent
One idea of the studio is to support multiplayer online games alongside the “big games” they have – they call them “service-type games.” The CEO cites Gwent as an example, an online card game from the world of The Witcher.
These service games are intended to ensure a steady cash flow. For the future, one can imagine creating numerous connections between these service games and the “big games”.
Cyberpunk 2077 still without a release date
Cyberpunk 2077 is loosely based on the tabletop RPG Cyberpunk 2020. However, since “2020” is now much too close, they have raised the year slightly.
No concrete release date for Cyberpunk 2077 has been announced yet. However, the game has been in development since 2012, and the developers want to take as much time as they need – a claim that few studios can afford nowadays.
CD Projekt Red is mainly known for the Witcher series and has also been trying its hand in recent months at a card game called Gwent, which takes place in the Witcher universe.
