In the PS Store, you can no longer purchase the PS4 version of Cyberpunk 2077. Sony pulls the emergency brake. But what does this mean for those who have already purchased the game?

Update at 9:50 AM: We have updated the article with a link to the return form and additional background information about Cyberpunk 2077.
What did Sony do? On the night of December 18, Sony removed Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store. There is no fixed date yet for when the title will return to the store. This change is now active indefinitely.
Sony confirmed that players on PS4 or PS5 with backward compatibility can receive a refund for their purchase. There is an official statement from Sony Interactive Entertainment Inc. (SIE) on the PlayStation website regarding this.
SIE is always striving to ensure high customer satisfaction. Therefore, we are now offering all players who purchased Cyberpunk 2077 in the PlayStation Store a full refund. Additionally, SIE will remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store until further notice.
Once we have verified that you purchased Cyberpunk 2077 in the PlayStation Store, we will begin processing your refund. Please note that the time required to complete your refund may vary depending on the payment method and financial institution.
Why is this happening? The Cyberpunk 2077 version for last-gen consoles has been a huge topic since the game’s release on December 10. There were several issues on older consoles that plagued the gaming experience. Performance problems and numerous bugs significantly marred the player experience.
Our colleagues from GamePro issued a purchase warning for Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One.
- The release of Cyberpunk 2077 was postponed three times
- There were accusations on the internet that the team was mercilessly working overtime
- The reasons for the 3rd delay were problems with last-gen – which, as it currently stands, continues to cause problems after release
This is not something Sony usually does: This is a huge decision in the history of Sony and the PS Store. Generally, you can only return games if you haven’t downloaded them yet (via GamePro). With this decision regarding Cyberpunk 2077, they may have taken an important step for the future of the PS Store.
How the stock price is doing: This news is also causing changes on the stock market. The stock price of CD Projekt RED fell by 19.15%. As of now (December 18 – 9:28 AM), it’s down by -17.49% according to Business Insider (via markets.businessinsider.com).
What does this mean for buyers? Statement from CD Projekt RED
This is what the developers say: On the Polish website Bankier.pl there is a statement from CD Projekt RED, the developers of Cyberpunk 2077.
They talk about Sony’s decision and suggest that the decision did not come as a surprise to the developers.
“This decision follows our discussions with Sony Interactive Entertainment regarding refunds for players who purchased Cyberpunk 2077 through the PS Store and now wish to receive a refund.”
For the buyers: All copies of the game that were previously purchased digitally from the PS Store remain usable for the buyers. CD Projekt RED confirmed this in the statement.
Moreover, gamers can still purchase physical PS4 versions in online stores and retail.
What about updates? Those who continue to play will receive updates. “All purchased digital and physical copies of the game will, of course, continue to receive support and updates to enhance the gaming experience,” stated CD Projekt RED (via Twitter).
How to get your money back: For this specific case, Sony has created a page for refunds. You will visit the Cyberpunk 2077 refund page and log in there with the details for your PS Store account with which you purchased the game.
Below the explanation, you will find the link that leads you to the refund form.
As you learn from the official statement, this process might take some time. How long it takes for Sony to verify your purchase and for you to receive your money back is currently unclear.
