There is still hope for crossplay between the PS4 and Xbox One consoles. Microsoft is talking with competitor Sony.
Playing together, even when on different platforms: that’s crossplay. Developers often say: Technically, it’s not a problem for players on PS4 and Xbox One to play together. We already have versions where this works internally, but Sony is blocking it.
Apparently, the market leader does not want its own players to be able to play with and against Xbox One gamers. The community should remain isolated. Those who want to play with their friends on PS4 should also buy a PS4.
On the sidelines of Gamescom, there was an interview with Aaron Greenberg, the marketing chief of Xbox One. In the interview, he emphasizes Microsoft’s new approach to bring players together, regardless of which platform they are on. He especially highlights Minecraft as a shining example. There, players can create content on their smartphones that they can then play on PC.
Microsoft hopes that Sony will participate in crossplay
Greenberg believes that this is a “user-friendly approach” that belongs to the future. Today, players are such that they play different games on various platforms: on PC, on consoles, and on their mobile devices, on smartphones and tablets.
To the question of whether Microsoft is still talking with Sony and wants to convince them to agree to crossplay, Green said: “Yes, absolutely. We are talking with Sony about crossplay.” We hope that Sony will be part of the approach to unite all players. So we are talking to them and hoping that they will support the initiative.
Villain and Hero – Roles are clearly defined
My MMO believes: It is as if Microsoft plays the role of the hero with noble motives, wanting to bring all gamers together. While Sony takes on the role of a villain who wants to stay isolated.
It is clear that these roles are determined by market shares. The question is whether Microsoft would really be so platform-open if they had the dominant console under contract. One can reasonably doubt that.
Nevertheless, the approach that all players can play together and share their content is indeed “player-friendly,” and one can only hope that Microsoft succeeds with the approach and that Sony will eventually relent.
Apparently, there are now at least talks. That’s already a step forward. In February 2016, it was said: The two giants Microsoft and Sony are not talking to each other at all.
