Many fans of Borderlands 3 hope that there will be crossplay. The head of Gearbox has now provided a clear answer on this.
The wait for Borderlands 3 is slowly but surely coming to an end, but many details about the upcoming loot shooter are still uncertain. For the past few days, rumors have been circulating on social media that Borderlands 3 could launch with crossplay. An event in the coming days was even supposed to announce this officially – at least that was the assumption.
But now there has been a reality check. Randy Pitchford revealed before the event that crossplay in Borderlands 3 will not be available at launch.
What was said? On Twitter, Randy Pitchford stated that the speculations were nonsense. The event, which was announced with “Togetherness,” will not address crossplay as a topic. He said in a tweet:
Some people speculate that the event tomorrow would be about crossplay. The thing tomorrow is fantastic, but it is not about crossplay. (…)
In another tweet, he added that there would be no crossplay at launch. So if you want to play with your friends, you have to agree on a platform.
Crossplay is planned though: Pitchford further explained that crossplay is not off the table. They intend to implement crossplay and will do so “as soon as it is feasible.” Gearbox is in talks with partners and aims to offer crossplay for as many platforms as possible.
If you were planning to play Borderlands 3 with your friends, you should agree on whether you prefer PC, PlayStation 4, or Xbox One. So at least at launch, crossplay is not to be expected. When or if it will actually come later remains to be seen.
Will you get Borderlands 3 even if there is no crossplay? Or was that an important reason for your purchase?
